Our Thoughts RADAR AI

This listing is misidentified: the Audio-Technica LP120XUSB is a direct-drive turntable, not headphones, so the $500 asking price can’t be benchmarked for the product you think you’re buying. If it truly is the LP120XUSB turntable, $500 is ambitious—well above the median of US$345 and the 75th percentile of US$389 from 14 recent USD listings, landing near the top of the used range (25th: US$262, 75th: US$389) and matching some upgraded or “excellent condition” examples.

The LP120XUSB is well-regarded for its robust DC servo motor, built-in phono preamp, variable pitch control, and USB output for digitizing vinyl, plus it ships with a decent VM95e cartridge. At US$500, it’s only a worthwhile buy if the unit is original-owner, fully functional, includes all accessories (dust cover, rubber mat, RCA cable, USB cable), and has no motor or tonearm issues; otherwise, it’s hard to justify over the US$345 median. Verify the exact model and condition before committing.

About Audio-Technica

Founded in 1962 in Tokyo's Shinjuku district by Hideo Matsushita, Audio-Technica began as a phonograph cartridge specialist, launching the innovative AT-1 moving-magnet model with a diamond-tipped cantilever that revolutionized affordable high-fidelity playback. Starting with just three employees in a rented house and one million yen in capital, the company quickly expanded, supplying cartridges to Japanese audio manufacturers and relocating as demand surged. This heritage of precision engineering and democratic access to superior sound defines its enduring Japanese craftsmanship.

Audio-Technica has broadened far beyond cartridges into a comprehensive lineup of hi-fi essentials, excelling in headphones, professional microphones, turntables, and phonographic styli. While not heavily focused on amplifiers, speakers, or DACs, it produces elite receivers, wireless systems, and cables, alongside OEM transducers and sensors for pro audio. Its turntables and headphones span entry-level to audiophile grades, with Bluetooth and noise-cancelling models bridging consumer and studio needs.

Renowned for delivering exceptional value through durable, innovative design, Audio-Technica occupies a solid mid-tier position in the hi-fi market, prized by enthusiasts for reliability without extravagant pricing. It garners consistent awards for performance and builds trust via Olympic-grade microphones and global subsidiaries, appealing to discerning buyers seeking proven engineering over boutique exclusivity.
