Seller's Description

For your consideration is a Harman Kardon 430 Twin Powered Stereo Receiver from 1975 in great condition with a complete recap and all troublesome transistors replaced (90+ parts replaced and upgraded, details below and pictures of replaced components). Cosmetically I would conservatively rate it 9 out of 10, for sound 10 out of 10 clean pristine sound on all inputs/outputs/functions/switches/buttons. The work done has returned this unit to its full original sonic glory. SEE FULL UPGRADE DETAILS BELOW AND REVIEW ALL PHOTOS CAREFULLY TO EVALUATE CONDITION. If you're here, you probably already know but this is a legendary receiver with big, warm clean sound far beyond its rated 25 watts per channel. These units are renowned for their twin amplifier transformers and classic sound. In an era where most companies were chasing more watts, Harman Kardon engineers focused on other metrics to improve sound at lower wattage delivering sound quality that exceeds its power rating and price point, making it a coveted item among collectors and music lovers. If you like that Harman Kardon "look", this one has it. I don't think a better looking receiver has been made. This thing looks slick, even in rooms with modern decor. You can't beat the style of this receiver and it has the goods under the hood to match.COSMETICS - There are just a few very light marks on the face with one ding/slight bend at th bottom left corner of aluminum face, see close up photos. Review all photos for physical condition assessment, I have photographed all imperfections. The black cover is in great shape with minimal signs of wear pointed out in close up photos, zoom photos and you will see this is in overall great cosmetic shape for its age. UPGRADES - 90+ PARTS REPLACED WITH MORDER EQUIVALENTS FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY RECAPPED all boards (EVERY SINGLE CAPACITOR REPLACED, 49 total including filter capacitors) and all all known troublesome/noisy transistors replaced in Power Amp (8 total), Tone Board (6 total), Phono Board 4 total) with modern equivalents for reliable performance and clean, pristine sound across all functions. Bias has been set to factory specifications 25mv. All dial lights, stereo bulb, power button bulb and dial pointer bulb have been replaced with LEDs, a much more reliable option. All pots/switches treated with appropriate deoxit d5 or f5, all functions sound pristine and clear at all levels. The FM receiver works great and the unit sounds amazing even in my rural part of the country, an attached antenna helps bring in further away stations. It will blow the roof off the house if you want it to, the sound fills the room and stays clean no matter the media or the volume. I strongly recommend playing with "contour" button engaged to hear the full potential of any Harman Kardon from this era, it is truly a warm, bright, clean sound. Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At US$1,000, this Harman Kardon 430 listing is drastically overpriced compared to the typical used market, sitting nearly three times the 75th percentile of US$343 and far above the median of US$173 from 349 recent comparable USD listings. Even accounting for the claimed upgrade of 90+ parts replaced, the asking price is ambitious to the point of being unreasonable for this vintage receiver, which originally retailed for only US$325 in 1976.

The HK 430 is well-regarded for its twin-power dual-mono design, featuring separate power supplies for each channel that deliver punch and detail, with tested outputs around 25 to 30 watts per channel at low distortion. While that engineering pedigree and the part replacements add value, they do not justify a US$1,000 tag; this price is a clear buying opportunity only if the seller drops it closer to the US$173–US$343 range, where the unit’s genuine performance and vintage appeal make it a solid deal.

About Harman Kardon

Harman Kardon traces its origins to 1953, when Dr. Sidney Harman and Bernard Kardon, both engineers frustrated with conservative audio manufacturing at the David Bogen Company, invested $5,000 each to launch their venture in Westbury, New York. Their debut product, the Festival D1000, became the world's first compact AM/FM hi-fi receiver, blending breakthrough technology with sleek design to make high-fidelity sound accessible beyond technical enthusiasts. Pioneering innovations like the 1958 Festival TA230 stereo receiver, the 1959 Citation II ultra-wide bandwidth tube amplifier, and the 1970 CAD5 hi-fi cassette recorder with Dolby noise reduction cemented their legacy in simplifying premium audio for the home.

The brand focuses on integrated receivers, amplifiers, tuners, and speakers that emphasize performance, reliability, and elegant industrial design. Over decades, it expanded into home theater systems and automotive audio, powering systems in vehicles from Land Rover and BMW to Volvo and Polestar. While not delving into turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables, Harman Kardon prioritizes cohesive hi-fi components that deliver warm, detailed sound without unnecessary complexity.

Harman Kardon holds a solid mid-tier position in the hi-fi market, renowned among knowledgeable buyers for its enduring quality and value rather than ultra-high-end exotica or vintage collector status. Now part of Harman International, it appeals to discerning listeners seeking dependable, stylish gear that echoes its innovative heritage without commanding boutique premiums.
