For your consideration is a Harman Kardon 730 Twin Powered Stereo Receiver from 1975 in near mint condition with upgrades, details below. Cosmetically I would conservatively rate it 9.8 out of 10, for sound 10 out of 10 clean pristine sound on all inputs/outputs/functions/switches/buttons. SEE FULL DETAILS BELOW AND REVIEW ALL PHOTOS CAREFULLY TO SEE JUST HOW CLEAN THIS RECEIVER IS AND NOTES REGARDING UPGRADES. If you're here, you probably already know but this is a legendary receiver with big, warm clean sound far beyond its rated 40 watts per channel. These units are renowned for their twin amplifier transformers and classic sound. In an era where most companies were chasing more watts, Harman Kardon engineers focused on other metrics to improve sound at lower wattage delivering sound quality that exceeds its power rating and price point, making it a coveted item among collectors and music lovers. If you like that Harman Kardon "look", this one has it. I don't think a better looking receiver has been made. This thing looks slick, even in rooms with modern decor. You can't beat the style of this receiver and it has the goods under the hood to match.COSMETICS 9.8 out of 10There are only a few minor cosmetic notes: Really light scratch under treble knob and light mark under balance and function knob, see close up photos, barely visible unless you lean in an look close. The only other item to note is a scratch on the top left across the plastic and into the case as seen in the close up photo. Other than that this unit is incredibly well kept and clean, please zoom all photos to appreciate just how nice this receiver is especially considering it was manufactured in 1976. UPGRADES - 95 TOTAL PARTS REPLACED WITH MODERN EQUIVALENTS TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY - SEE PHOTO OF ALL PARTS REPLACED: Every single capacitor on every single board including filter caps have been replaced, every known troublesome/noisy transistor has been replaced in tone board (8 total), Power board (6 total), phono board (6 total), switches board (4 total), New LED bulbs for dial lights, stereo bulb, dial pointer bulb, power button bulb. New trim pot resistors for dialing in bias. All pots/switches treated with appropriate Deoxit d5/f5. Bias has been set to factory standard 35mv on both channels. The FM receiver works great and the unit sounds amazing even in my rural part of the country, an attached antenna helps bring in further away stations and stereo which is needed to illuminate the stereo light, again attach an antenna if you live in a rural area. It will blow the roof off the house if you want it to, the sound fills the room and stays clean no matter the media or the volume. I strongly recommend playing with "contour" button engaged to hear the full potential of any Harman Kardon from this era, it is truly a warm, bright, clean sound. I have collected and auditioned the best receivers from Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui, Yamaha and I have settled on the Harman Kardon 730 as the best looking and sounding for my eye and ear, slightly overtaking Marantz as a close 2nd. This truly is an incredible piece of equipment, these models really do live up to their sterling reputation and this is an opportunity to own a nearly fully restored (everything left in this receiver are not known to have issues so they have been left alone), near mint condition HK 730.I have many years servicing, selling and shipping heavy, vintage stereo equipment. This will be thoroughly and adequately packaged for safe shipping. I will also purchase insurance so buy with peace of mind knowing this will arrive as seen/described, should anything happen, we are insured and covered on this transaction. Specifications:Tuning range: FM, MWPower output: 40 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo)Frequency response: 20Hz to 20kHzTotal harmonic distortion: 0.3%Damping factor: 40Signal to noise ratio: 65dB (line)Speaker load impedance: 4Ω to 16ΩDimensions: 432 x 368 x 140mmWeight: 30 lb.
This US$2,500 asking price is ambitious, sitting well above the 75th percentile of US$2,000 and far exceeding the median of US$1,500 for recent comparable listings. While the HK 730 Twin Powered is a respected 1970s American receiver with 50 watts per channel and exceptional 0.1% distortion, typical market values for this unit generally range from US$400 to US$600, making this listing roughly four times the common ceiling.
The receiver offers genuine vintage appeal with robust FM/MW tuning and dual phono inputs, but at US$2,500, the unknown condition is a critical risk that demands immediate clarification. Unless this is a pristine, original-owner unit with a full service history and rare accessories, the price is unjustified compared to the broader market; buyers should treat this as a high-risk opportunity unless the seller can prove exceptional provenance that justifies the steep premium.

Harman Kardon traces its origins to 1953, when Dr. Sidney Harman and Bernard Kardon, both engineers frustrated with conservative audio manufacturing at the David Bogen Company, invested $5,000 each to launch their venture in Westbury, New York. Their debut product, the Festival D1000, became the world's first compact AM/FM hi-fi receiver, blending breakthrough technology with sleek design to make high-fidelity sound accessible beyond technical enthusiasts. Pioneering innovations like the 1958 Festival TA230 stereo receiver, the 1959 Citation II ultra-wide bandwidth tube amplifier, and the 1970 CAD5 hi-fi cassette recorder with Dolby noise reduction cemented their legacy in simplifying premium audio for the home.
The brand focuses on integrated receivers, amplifiers, tuners, and speakers that emphasize performance, reliability, and elegant industrial design. Over decades, it expanded into home theater systems and automotive audio, powering systems in vehicles from Land Rover and BMW to Volvo and Polestar. While not delving into turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables, Harman Kardon prioritizes cohesive hi-fi components that deliver warm, detailed sound without unnecessary complexity.
Harman Kardon holds a solid mid-tier position in the hi-fi market, renowned among knowledgeable buyers for its enduring quality and value rather than ultra-high-end exotica or vintage collector status. Now part of Harman International, it appeals to discerning listeners seeking dependable, stylish gear that echoes its innovative heritage without commanding boutique premiums.
