A Quad 405 is still a serious, no-nonsense power amp, but this one is priced well above the local used market. Against 31 recent EUR comparables, €850 sits far over the €428 75th percentile and more than double the €339 median, so this is ambitious even before factoring in the for_parts status.
That makes it a buy only for a very specific case: you want a donor chassis, rare spares, or a restoration project and you know exactly what’s missing. The 405 is valued for its smooth, forgiving sound and sturdy, serviceable design, but with a parts-only listing the real value is in originality, completeness, and whether the key internals are intact. At this price, I’d want clear proof of major hard-to-find parts and no hidden corrosion or board damage.

Quad, the venerable British hi-fi brand, traces its origins to 1936 in London, when engineer Peter J. Walker founded S.P. Fidelity Sound Systems, soon renamed the Acoustical Manufacturing Company. Relocating to Huntingdon in 1941 after wartime bombing, the firm shifted from public address gear to domestic audio amid post-war demand for superior sound reproduction. Walker's pioneering ethos—prioritizing "the closest approach to the original sound"—defined Quad from its early QA12 amplifiers, adopted by the BBC, to the iconic Quad I of 1953.

The Quad II power amplifier of 1953 introduced cathode coupling for vanishingly low distortion, while the 1956 ESL 57 delivered the world's first full-range electrostatic speaker, employing a massless film diaphragm for unparalleled transparency and transient speed.
