Seller's Description

Pair of Icon Audio MB150 KT120 monoblock power amplifiers, manufactured in 2012 (confirmed by Icon Audio). I have owned them since 2016 and they have been used regularly until recently being replaced by a Sanders Magtech in my Quad ESL2812 system. They are in excellent working order, have been thoroughly cleaned, fully tested and the output valve bias checked in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. Fitted with the original Russian-made Tung-Sol valve complement, including KT120 output valves. One amplifier had a repair to the mains power switch assembly in 2020, arranged through th... read more

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At £1,750, this is far above the normal used market for a Tung-Sol KT120 tube, which is generally around £70-£130 each new from UK/EU dealers and roughly £165-£330 for common matched pairs/quads in current listings, so the ask looks ambitious unless this is a very large matched lot or a special, verified batch. If it’s just a single tube or a small set, I’d pass on price alone; if it’s a rare, heavily tested matched collection with documentation, the value case still needs to be very strong.

The KT120 is well regarded for its high power handling, strong bass grip, and robust, punchy sound, and it’s a sensible choice for amplifiers that can use its extra headroom. For a buy at this level, I’d want clear proof of matched testing, low hours, and exact quantity, plus confirmation that the amp is KT120-compatible and that any original boxes or test sheets are included; otherwise, there’s not enough upside here to justify the premium.

About Tung-Sol

Tung-Sol emerged as an American electronics manufacturer founded in 1904 by Harvey Wilson Harper and brothers Herbert E. and Herbert C. Plass in New York City. The company's name derives from "tungsten" and the Latin word "sol," reflecting its early focus on incandescent lamp technology. Beginning with automotive headlights and Christmas tree lights, Tung-Sol expanded into radio and vacuum tube production throughout the early twentieth century, establishing itself as a serious player in American electronics manufacturing before relocating to Newark, New Jersey in 1917.

Within the audio industry, Tung-Sol's legacy rests almost entirely on vacuum tubes rather than complete amplifiers or speakers. The company's most significant contribution to hi-fi was the 6550 power tube, conceived and introduced in 1955 specifically for high-fidelity applications. This tube remains in production and continues powering premium audio systems decades later. Tung-Sol also manufactured other critical audio tubes including the 6SN7GTB, which audiophiles still seek for tube rolling and system optimization.

Tung-Sol occupies a unique position in the hi-fi market as a vintage-collector and niche boutique brand. The company's original American-made tubes from the mid-twentieth century command premium prices among discerning audiophiles who value their sonic characteristics and build quality. Modern Tung-Sol tubes are manufactured under license in Russia, creating a distinct market segment where vintage American examples are prized by tube enthusiasts, while contemporary production serves budget-conscious buyers seeking the brand's heritage at lower price points.
