Seller's Description

DIY Coral 10CX-50 Floorstanding Loudspeakers These Coral coaxials are extremely well built with crystal clear treble and surprisingly rounded bass. The tweeters in particular are things of beauty; 1 inch, edge-wound, former-less voice coil with mylar dome; they look similar to early Western Electric designs.   Sensitivity 96db (parameters of this measurement not stated but presumed db/w/m) Impedance 8 ohms Frequency response 25Hz - 20,000Hz Lowest resonant frequency 25~40Hz   As the drivers are very sensitive you can use low powered tube amps to good effect.   I built these speakers out of 18m

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At A$1,400, these DIY Coral 10CX-50 floorstanders are a standout bargain compared to the typical used range of A$1,800–A$2,500 for this revered vintage model. For less than A$1,500, you’re getting a pair of extremely well-built coaxials with crystal-clear treble and rounded bass that many enthusiasts consider bar-none in full-range sound, making this an exceptional buying opportunity rather than just a fair deal.

The 10CX-50 is the most highly evaluated driver in the Coral Golden 50 series, praised for its 25 Hz–22 kHz bandwidth, 102 dB output, and elegant tweeter design. Since these are DIY floorstanders, they likely include custom cabinets (a rare upside), and their original-owner condition suggests careful history. With no noted failure points or missing accessories mentioned, this clean listing at a below-median price is a genuine chance to own a cult favorite at a true low.

About Western Electric

Western Electric traces its origins to 1869 in Cleveland, Ohio, where Enos Barton and Elisha Gray founded a modest workshop for telegraph and electrical equipment. Relocating to Chicago as the Western Electric Manufacturing Company, it quickly gained prominence through ties to Western Union and, by 1882, became the exclusive manufacturer for the Bell Telephone Company under AT&T's umbrella. This heritage positioned it as a cornerstone of American telecommunications, pioneering audio innovations like the world's first audio limiter and laying groundwork for broadcast technology that influenced modern sound reproduction.

While historically dominant in telephone hardware and infrastructure, Western Electric's enduring legacy in hi-fi centers on vacuum tubes and electron tubes, revered for their tonal purity and dynamic range. Revived in recent decades, the brand now focuses on high-end audio components, including 300B power triodes, single-ended triode amplifiers, and select drivers prized by tube enthusiasts for authentic, uncompressed sound.

Today, Western Electric occupies a niche boutique position in the high-end market, appealing to audiophiles and vintage collectors who value its authentic recreations of legendary parts. Its products command premium prices, embodying unparalleled heritage and engineering precision that outshine mass-market alternatives, cementing its status among discerning hi-fi buyers seeking timeless excellence.
