RØDE Microphones traces its roots to 1967, when Henry Freedman, a London-born sound engineer, and his Swedish wife Astrid founded Freedman Electronics in Australia after emigrating from Europe. Their son Peter, inspired by a Chinese large-diaphragm condenser microphone spotted at a 1981 Shanghai trade show, imported and refined it into the NT1 in the early 1990s, formally launching the RØDE brand—its distinctive 'Ø' nodding to the family's Scandinavian heritage. From modest PA installations, the company evolved into a global force, acquiring Event Electronics in 2006 and Mackie in 2023.
