This Onkyo was built in the early 1990s, and if you know the history of Onkyo, you know that they were always coming up with ways to better their competition. One said competitor was Harmon Kardon, who at the time was buying everyone and everything they could. They couldn't buy Onkyo because Onkyo's strict Japanese quality control, among other issues, was unwilling to lower their standards. Nothing against HK, I own one, and it's one of my favorite amps. The truth is that Onkyo simply built better equipment at each price point. The A-rv401 sits directly in the mid-tier because it's built to last. This is why there are so many Onkyos still running with zero issues and very little maintenance. The folks at Onkyo have a standard, and at least when this piece was made, those standards were absolutely followed.
The Onkyo A-RV401 has a solid reputation as a no-nonsense integrated amp, but at US$275 it is clearly above your recent comparable market, where the median is US$120 and even the 75th percentile is US$200. That makes this asking price ambitious, not a bargain.
It can still be a worthwhile buy if the unit is genuinely clean, fully working, and comes from careful ownership, because these older Onkyo integrateds are often appreciated for straightforward, listenable performance and good day-to-day usability. But at this level, I’d want proof of healthy operation, quiet channels, and no scratchy controls or relay issues before paying up; otherwise, it’s hard to justify versus better-priced examples.

Despite bankruptcy challenges in the late 2010s, its revival under new ownership preserves a legacy of technological innovation and pure sound enjoyment, appealing to both vintage enthusiasts and modern home cinema setups.
