Overview

The "Krell Audio Standard" is a dual-chassis monoblock with a regulated power supply separated from the audio circuitry.

The regulated power supply features Krell's "Anticipator" circuit that senses input at a high speed of 1,800 V / μ a second and sets the bias, which avoids the reduction of instant dynamics that is typical of regulated power supplies.

Krell's Sustained Plateau Bias system also monitors the input signal to determine the bias level required to maintain pure class-A operation, using five discrete bias levels, each equivalent to a class-A amplifier of increasing power capability, keep power consumption and heat dissipation to a minimum. The amp actually maintains the higher output level for 90 seconds before changing back to a lower level.

Produced in cooperation with Motorola, 48 TO-3 can-type output transistors, are each fed by 48 matching regulator transistors offer extremely stable voltage and current, even at 1 Ω load output.

The result is effortless power delivered against an almost unnoticeable background, obviously capable of driving the most demanding loudspeakers. Also, the backlit meters are a pleasure to enjoy in low light.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At A$18,700, this is well above the typical used market for recent comparable AUD listings: the median is A$2,338, the 75th percentile is A$4,678, and this asking price is far beyond even the upper quartile. On your database numbers alone, it’s an ambitious ask unless the listing hides exceptional provenance or a serious originality/servicing premium.

That said, these are genuinely respected high-end monos: Krell’s KAS reputation rests on big current delivery, grip, and control, with the kind of effortless authority that still appeals if you run difficult speakers. If they’re clean, unmodified, and come with strong provenance, there’s real upside for a buyer who specifically wants a statement amp; just make sure there’s recent servicing history, because age-related wear in a heavyweight amp at this level matters a lot more than cosmetics.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Krell

Krell Industries, founded in 1980 in the United States by Dan D'Agostino and his wife Rondi, emerged from a passion for pushing audio engineering boundaries. Based initially in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and later settling in nearby Orange, the brand drew its name from the advanced alien race in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, symbolizing limitless technological power. The company's debut at the 1981 Consumer Electronics Show with the KSA-100, a high-power Class A amplifier, sparked immediate demand and established Krell as a force in American hi-fi innovation.

Krell specializes in high-end amplification, with its power amplifiers—epitomized by flagships like the Master Reference Amplifier—earning legendary status for their raw dynamics and precision. The lineup extends to preamplifiers, surround sound processors, digital-to-analog converters, CD and Super Audio CD players, loudspeakers, and subwoofers, all engineered for uncompromised performance in music and home theater systems.

Positioned firmly at the pinnacle of the high-end audio market, Krell commands respect among discerning audiophiles for its cutting-edge circuitry, massive power supplies, and relentless pursuit of sonic excellence. A top-tier brand alongside legends like Levinson and Threshold, it appeals to buyers seeking reference-level gear that defines the genre, even amid recent ownership transitions following Rondi's passing in 2024.
