At kr 14,000, this looks fair-to-strong for an Ayre K-3 if the unit is healthy and complete; Ayre’s original base price was about kr 35,000, and used examples tend to sit well below that, so this asking level lands in sensible territory rather than feeling stretched. Without condition details, I wouldn’t call it a steal, but it is priced like a legitimate buy for a serious preamp rather than a gamble.
The K-3 is well regarded for clean, open, very low-noise solid-state control, with enough refinement to show upstream changes clearly and enough drive to anchor a high-end system. It’s a worthwhile pickup if the remote works, the phono stage is included if you want it, and the unit has been serviced or at least runs quietly with no switching or balance issues; at this age, those practical checks matter more than cosmetics.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Ayre Acoustics was founded in 1993 by Charles Hansen, a veteran speaker designer and former founder of Avalon Acoustics, establishing the company in the United States. Hansen's deep roots in audio engineering and his commitment to precision design shaped Ayre's foundational philosophy from inception. The brand emerged during a period of significant advancement in high-fidelity technology, positioning itself as a serious contender in the premium audio market from its earliest days.
Ayre Acoustics specializes in high-end audio components, with particular strength in digital-to-analog converters, preamplifiers, and integrated amplifiers. The company is recognized for applying rigorous, cutting-edge engineering principles to stereo equipment design, focusing on what the brand describes as "purity in music reproduction." While the search results emphasize their digital and amplification products, Ayre's portfolio reflects a comprehensive approach to source-to-speaker signal chain optimization rather than a single-category focus.
The brand occupies a firmly high-end position within the audio industry, recognized as a world leader among discerning audiophiles and professionals. Ayre has built its reputation on uncompromising design philosophy and award-winning products that set performance standards within the premium segment. The company appeals to serious listeners willing to invest substantially in audio quality, positioning itself alongside other boutique manufacturers that prioritize sonic accuracy and engineering integrity over mass-market accessibility.
