Seller's Description

Engineered to excel with both MC and MM phono cartridges, the Doshi Phono Preamplifier includes a Moving Coil Pre-Preamplifier whose J-Fet transistors provide 26 dB of gain, followed by a pair of monaural, 2:1 step-down transformers which lower gain to 20 dB. Although MC head amps often use step-up transformers (i.e., to increase gain) our novel use of step-down transformers accomplishes three critical benefits: Provides Galvanic Isolation, keeping Pre-Preamplifier grounds separate from the rest of the preamp Converts balanced cartridge input to single ended output, enabling our “Zero-Feedback” tube circuit Impedance is stepped-down 4:1, providing increased bandwidth and a low impedance output to drive the tube MM section.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Pre-owned and priced at US$8,995, this sits well above the typical used market for this piece: the recent comparable median is US$6,000, with the 75th percentile at US$7,498, so the ask is ambitious. It’s not an automatic pass, but it needs something special—mint cosmetic condition, full packaging, recent service, or strong provenance—to justify the premium.

That said, this is a respected phono stage for serious analog systems: Doshi gear is known for a very refined, quiet, highly resolving presentation with excellent tonal density and dynamic ease. If the unit is truly clean and complete, it could still be worthwhile for someone specifically chasing this level of performance, but at this price I’d want confirmation of tube hours, any service history, and included accessories before calling it a buy.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Doshi Audio

Doshi Audio: Brand Overview

Doshi Audio was founded in 2006 by Nick Doshi, a former recording engineer with decades of experience capturing live performances. The company emerged from Doshi's hobby of building audio equipment for friends in the New York/New Jersey audiophile community, which eventually attracted international interest. What began as a personal passion evolved into a formally structured business dedicated to translating the nuances of the original musical event into the listening room. The brand is handcrafted in America and remains owner-operated by its founder.

The company specializes in high-end tube amplifiers and preamplifiers, with a focused product range that includes full-function preamplifiers, line stages, and phono stages. Doshi's engineering philosophy emphasizes precision transformer design—notably the 31-position volume control transformer developed through collaboration with Brian Sowter—and meticulous attention to signal integrity. The Evolution Series represents the company's current amplifier line, reflecting ongoing refinement of their core design principles.

Doshi Audio occupies the premium boutique segment of high-end audio, known for uncompromising sound quality and reliability rather than mass-market appeal. The brand has cultivated a strong reputation among discerning audiophiles seeking components that prioritize fidelity to the source material and trouble-free operation. With a deliberately limited product range and handcrafted manufacturing approach, Doshi Audio positions itself as a niche manufacturer for serious music lovers willing to invest in equipment designed for a lifetime of musical satisfaction.
