Seller's Description

Tannoy Canterbury GR Floorstanding Loudspeakers This is a superb pair of Tannoy Canterbury GR. Most likely the best speaker made by Tannoy. This is one of the last speakers made in Scotland prior to manufacturing being moved to China. I am the first owner of the speakers and they were purchased new from Class A Audio in Melbourne.   This speakers have only been used in a dedicated 2 channel stereo system with high quality amplification. A home theatre system was used completely separate from the 2 channel stereo system. They have been sparingly used due to work commitments. They are in excelle

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At A$26,000, this is roughly in line with the used market for a Canterbury GR, and it looks like a fair ask rather than a bargain or a stretch. New pricing for the pair has been around A$30,372, so this listing is only modestly below retail; on that basis, I’d call it fair if the speakers are genuinely clean and complete.

The Canterbury GR is one of Tannoy’s most respected Prestige models: a big, highly efficient Dual Concentric design with scale, image focus, and easy driveability that suits serious tube or solid-state amps. The upside here is that these are rare, prestige-level speakers with real long-term appeal, so a well-kept pair can be a keeper. At this price, I’d want evidence of careful ownership, matched cosmetics, and no crossover or driver issues.

About Tannoy

Tannoy traces its origins to 1926 in London, where Yorkshire-born engineer Guy R. Fountain established the Tulsemere Manufacturing Company in a modest garage. Initially focused on battery chargers and rectifiers for early radio sets, the brand name Tannoy emerged in 1928 as a contraction of "tantalum alloy," the key materials in its innovative electrolytic rectifiers. This British pioneer quickly pivoted to loudspeakers, cementing a heritage of audio innovation that spans nearly a century, including a relocation to Coatbridge, Scotland, in the 1970s.

The company specializes in loudspeakers, renowned for its revolutionary Dual Concentric driver introduced in 1947 at the London Radio Show, which transformed studio monitoring and home audio. Tannoy's portfolio centers on high-quality speakers—ranging from bookshelf and floorstanding models to the iconic Prestige series—alongside public address systems. While historically versatile in professional sound, its modern emphasis remains on hi-fi stereo and home cinema speakers, leveraging decades of driver technology expertise rather than diversifying into amplifiers, turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables.

Tannoy holds a revered position as one of the world's oldest loudspeaker manufacturers, blending high-end prestige with vintage appeal for discerning collectors and audiophiles. Its studio-grade monitors and meticulously crafted cabinets, often produced by specialists like Poland's Diora, earn consistent praise from hi-fi critics for exceptional clarity and dynamics. Now under the Music Tribe group, Tannoy endures as a benchmark for authentic British sound reproduction, appealing to knowledgeable buyers seeking timeless performance over fleeting trends.
