Seller's Description

Magnepan MG 3.3/R Floorstanding Loudspeakers I purchased these 2 years ago from Bill McLean. They had been reconditioned which included replacing the glue holding the wires to the Mylar panels and having new fabric covers installed. The oak timber is in excellent condition and in my opinion is better than what comes on the new models.    They ended my search and I have been extremely happy with the experience they provide. I honestly thought I would keep them forever as it is unlikely I will ever be able to replace them. I did trade them on a pair of new 3.7i only to return them and ask for th

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At A$3,500, this is a strong deal against your own market snapshot: it sits well below the A$3,606 25th percentile and miles under the A$14,065 median, so it reads as bargain territory rather than merely fair. For a big Magnepan, that’s an especially interesting price point if the panels are presentable and working properly.

The appeal here is straightforward: the 3.3 R is a serious full-range planar speaker with that huge, open, low-colouration Magnepan soundstage, strong midrange naturalness, and excellent transparency when set up well. The main buy-or-pass question is condition, because older Maggies are very placement-sensitive and repairs can get costly if the panels, tweeters, or sock/frames need attention. If it’s genuinely intact and singing, this is a very compelling entry price.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Magnepan

Founded in 1969 in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, by engineer Jim Winey, Magnepan emerged from his dissatisfaction with electrostatic speakers during his time at 3M. Seeking a superior alternative, Winey invented the Magneplanar—a thin-film magnetic driver that rivaled electrostats without their limitations. Bootstrapped with funds from friends and family, the family-owned company has remained American-made, now led by Winey's son Mark from a 50,000-square-foot facility, upholding over five decades of planar innovation.

Magnepan specializes exclusively in planar magnetic loudspeakers, from compact Mini Maggies to towering flagships like the 3.7i. These full-range or hybrid panels eschew traditional cones for quasi-ribbon and true-ribbon drivers, delivering expansive soundstages and lifelike transients. The lineup avoids amplifiers, turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables, focusing solely on speakers that demand high-current amplification to thrive.

Positioned as a high-end niche leader, Magnepan commands reverence among audiophiles for neutral voicing, room-filling dispersion, and value that outpaces competitors dollar-for-dollar. Handcrafted in the USA with domestic parts—"Made in America. Sold in China"—its panels offer unmatched transparency at premium prices, cementing a legacy as the pinnacle of planar magnetic reproduction for discerning listeners worldwide.
