Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At kr 2,500, this sits at the very low end of the used market for a Primare D20 and looks like a strong buy if it’s working properly; equivalent listings and recent second-hand offers land around this level, while the original-price context puts it well below new. The price is not ambitious at all, especially for a reputable Swedish player/DAC from a brand that still has cachet.

That’s what makes it appealing: the D20 is a solid, musical older digital source with a good internal DAC, and it’s the kind of piece enthusiasts still buy for a relaxed, clean presentation and sturdy build. If it includes the remote and the laser has been recently replaced, that’s meaningful upside. At this price, I’d mainly want confirmation of disc reading, stable playback, and that the remote is included.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Primare

Primare traces its origins to 1985, when Danish industrial designer and audiophile Bo Christensen, frustrated by the era's cluttered audio gear, founded the company alongside engineer Bent Nielsen. Born in Denmark as Primare Systems AB, it embodied a mission for exceptional sound quality, elegant Scandinavian aesthetics, precise proportions, and intuitive interfaces. Rejecting the industry's short product cycles, Primare pioneered "living products" designed for longevity and evolution, with its debut 928 series—now exhibited in Copenhagen's Designmuseum Denmark—setting a minimalist benchmark against button-heavy contemporaries. A 1993 partnership with Swedish firm Xena, involving Lars Pedersen, propelled the influential 30 series in 1998, cementing its design legacy while shifting manufacturing to southern Sweden.

The brand specializes in high-fidelity separates, excelling in integrated amplifiers, power amplifiers, preamplifiers, CD players, network streamers, and DACs that handle analog, digital, wired, and wireless sources with balanced precision. Iconic lines like the 200, 300, and ongoing 30 and 15 series prioritize simple circuitry and modular upgrades, from tuners and Blu-ray players to modern computer audio solutions, always favoring functionality over gimmicks.

Primare occupies a premium mid-to-high-end niche, revered by discerning buyers for its honest integrity, timeless Scandinavian design, and deeply satisfying performance that endures across decades. Award-winning components, such as the EISA-honored CD32/I32, deliver audiophile purity without ostentation, positioning Primare as a practical choice for those seeking lasting quality over fleeting trends in a market craving authenticity.
