Der Pioneer SG-9800 ist ein grafischer Stereo-Equalizer aus der frühen bis mittleren Phase der 1980er Jahre, der zur sogenannten „Serie 80“ von Pioneer gehört und oberhalb der kleineren Modelle SG-300, SG-550 und SG-9500 positioniert war. Als professionell anmutendes Gerät wurde er vor allem für ambitionierte Hi-Fi-Systeme konzipiert, die eine gezielte Anpassung des Frequenzgangs an Raumakustik, Hörgewohnheiten oder tonale Mängel in der Aufnahme oder Anlage ermöglichen sollten.
Der SG-9800 bietet pro Kanal zehn Frequenzbänder, die jeweils über präzise, vertikal angeordnete Schieberegler mit einem Regelbereich von ±12 dB einstellbar sind. Die gewählten Mittenfrequenzen pro Band lauten für beide Kanäle: 32 Hz, 63 Hz, 120 Hz, 240 Hz, 480 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz und 16 kHz. Damit deckt der Equalizer das gesamte relevante Hörspektrum mit enger Rasterung im Mittenbereich ab, was eine sehr differenzierte Klanganpassung erlaubt.
