Der Amazon Echo Dot der zweiten Generation ist die kompakte Variante des größeren Echo-Systems. Dieses Modell der zweiten Generation kam 2016 auf den Markt, um an den Erfolg des ursprünglichen Echo Dot anzuknüpfen, und bot neben einigen neuen Funktionen auch eine schwarze Farbvariante. Als Smart Speaker lässt sich der Echo Dot per Bluetooth mit einem Smart-Gerät verbinden. Wer einen satteren Klang wünscht, als das kleine Gerät von Haus aus bietet, kann es über Bluetooth oder einen 3,5-mm-Audioanschluss mit externen Lautsprechern koppeln. Der Echo Dot ist jedoch weit mehr als nur ein kabelloser Lautsprecher; er dient auch als Zentrale für Amazons Sprachassistentin Alexa. Sobald das Mikrofon-Array des Echo Dot das Aktivierungswort „Alexa“ registriert, wird die Assistentin aktiv: Sie liefert Nachrichten oder Wetterinfos, startet Musik-Streaming-Dienste oder erzählt sogar einen Witz. Zudem lässt sich der Echo Dot mit Apps verknüpfen und als Steuerzentrale für eine Vielzahl weiterer Smart-Home-Geräte nutzen.
