The ProJect Pre Box RS Digital combines all the features of the DAC Box RS with selectable solid-state or tube output stages. As in all of Pro-Ject’s top-class digital products, they use PCM1792 DAC chips from Texas Instruments, but a new feature in the Pre Box RS Digital is its dual chip mode to achieve ultimate fidelity. As a selectable feature a second DAC chip from Texas Instruments is on board, that can handle up to 32bit/384kHz.Included on the Pre Box Digital RS is a headphone output with selectable impedances for perfect matching with your headphones. The Pre Box Digital RS offers 3-dimensional sound-staging, perfect micro dynamics and ultimate resolution combined with flexibility to use a wide range of digital and 1 analogue sound sources. Combined with the Pro-Ject CD Box RS the Pre Box RS Digital will give outstanding sound experience, because of a I²S connection provided via RJ45 that offers jitter-free disc playback. Unknown condition makes this a bit harder to judge, but US$799 looks around fair-to-good rather than a steal. Recent used asks I found cluster roughly from the mid-US$500s to around US$1,000+, with a median in the high-US$700s, so this lands close to the middle of the market.
That’s still a worthwhile piece: it’s a well-regarded DAC/preamplifier/headphone amp with a strong reputation for flexibility, adjustable headphone output, and solid sound quality. If it includes the original power supply, remote, and is fully functional with clean tubes/display and no input/output quirks, it’s a sensible buy at this price; if anything is missing, the negotiation room is limited.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Pro-Ject Audio Systems traces its roots to 1991 in Austria's Weinviertel region, north of Vienna, where founder Heinz Lichtenegger launched the brand amid the CD revolution. Kicked out of music school as a youth, Lichtenegger channeled his passion for analog sound into affordable, high-quality turntables at a time when vinyl seemed obsolete. His debut Pro-Ject 1, hand-assembled in the Czech Republic, earned rave reviews as a top high-end device, igniting a success story that relocated headquarters to Vienna before returning to Mistelbach in Lower Austria.
The brand excels in turntables, establishing itself as the world's largest and leading producer in that category, while expanding into a full spectrum of hi-fi components since 2000. Offerings include amplifiers, DACs, headphone amps, speakers, cables, and phono stages, all emphasizing essential sound reproduction with durable materials and minimalist design. Manufacturing remains European—primarily in Czechia, Slovakia, and Germany—prioritizing sustainability through local sourcing, short transport, and products built for longevity.
Pro-Ject holds a commanding niche as the go-to for mid-tier audiophiles seeking boutique European craftsmanship without extravagant pricing. Distributed in over 80 countries, it appeals to vinyl revivalists and discerning buyers who value analog purity, innovation, and value-driven performance over flashy excess, cementing its reputation as a pioneer in accessible high-fidelity.
