Condition is unknown, so the price has to carry most of the weight here. At US$2,295, it lands right at the 75th percentile of recent asking prices, so this is ambitious rather than a bargain; I’d only call it fair if the amp is exceptionally clean, fully sorted, and comes with something meaningful in the package.
That said, the DMA 80 has real credibility: it’s a respected high-end stereo power amp with the speed, grip, and refinement Spectral is known for, and demand stays healthy when examples are tidy. If the unit is documented as fully functional, recently serviced, and complete, it can still be a worthwhile buy—but at this number I’d want confirmation of service history, originality, and any included accessories before jumping.

Spectral Audio, an American high-end audio brand, traces its origins to 1975 when Richard Fryer founded the company in pursuit of unparalleled musical realism. Initially sparked by Fryer's collaboration with partner Damian Martin to create a reference amplifier for Sound Advice in 1976, the venture evolved into Spectral Incorporated with the launch of the landmark MS-One amplifier in 1977 or 1978. Fryer enlisted the expertise of Dr. Keith O. Johnson, a legendary recording engineer and circuit designer renowned for innovations in analog and digital audio, including early advancements in cassette duplication.
The brand focuses on premium electronics, particularly power amplifiers, preamplifiers, and digital source components like state-of-the-art DACs, designed to integrate seamlessly as a unified system. Spectral eschews mass production, building limited quantities of each product to push performance boundaries without regard for cost constraints, treating development like an independent research lab rather than a conventional business.
Spectral holds a niche boutique position in the high-end market, revered by discerning audiophiles for its timeless engineering and refusal to chase trends, reviews, or aggressive marketing. Operating almost as a well-kept secret for over four decades, it prioritizes sonic purity and system synergy, appealing to serious listeners who value substance over hype.
