Seller's Description

TEAC AD-500 Stereo Compact Disc CD Player/Reverse Cassette Deck TESTED READPlayer is in used condition, but has been checked for all functions of playback. Unit is able to probably track and play and CD or cassette tape that is loaded into it, while showing no incongruities in playback quality that can note. The only function that has not been tested is recording, and should be presumed non-operational. All buttons along the face are appropriately responsive to their designated action, display screen shines brightly when the unit is in and running, and power chord is void if any tears or frays along the length of the cable. Unit will be sold AS-IS described, and will not be eligible for returns whatsoever. Player is in fair shape cosmetically, showing signs of age-related wear around the exterior. Most notable points of damage are seen along the tape face of the metal bonnet, where one side is severely dented inwards. Do note that the knobs for pitch control and headphone volume are missing, and will need a suitable replacement to be adjusted easily. Unit does not include any remote control, but will be shipped with a set of stereo L/R RCAs as shown in the listing images. Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At US$149, this sits in the fair-to-good zone for a working AD-500: similar examples have been seen around US$125 to US$185 for pre-owned units, with cleaner, tested pieces pushing higher and parts-only listings clustering much lower. That makes this asking price reasonable if it’s fully functional and cosmetically decent, and especially attractive if it includes the remote or any documented service history.

The appeal here is the format: a compact TEAC combo that gives you a CD player and reverse cassette deck in one chassis, handy for a vintage-friendly system or a secondary room. These are well-liked for convenience and straightforward everyday use more than audiophile fireworks. At this price, the key check is simple: confirm both transports work, tray and tape mechanism are smooth, and all inputs/outputs behave as they should.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About TEAC

TEAC Corporation stands as a pillar of Japanese audio engineering, founded in August 1953 by Katsuma Tani, a former aeronautics engineer with an uncompromising vision for sound reproduction. The company emerged from the merger of two entities—the Tokyo Television Acoustic Company (1953) and the Tokyo Electro-Acoustic Company (1956)—consolidating under the TEAC name in 1964. From its inception, TEAC pursued a singular mission: to deliver authentic sound to music enthusiasts through technically superior products, a philosophy that has guided seven decades of innovation.

TEAC built its reputation primarily on magnetic recording equipment, establishing dominance in open-reel tape decks and cassette machines throughout the 1960s and beyond. The company's flagship TD-102 stereo tape recorder, launched in April 1957, gained international recognition and set the standard for the industry. Beyond tape machines, TEAC expanded into turntables, CD players, and digital audio components, while simultaneously establishing TASCAM in 1971 as its professional recording subsidiary—a brand that became synonymous with studio-grade equipment worldwide.

Today, TEAC occupies a distinctive position bridging vintage collectibility and contemporary hi-fi. The brand commands respect among analog enthusiasts and professional engineers for its legacy of precision engineering, while its modern Esoteric line serves the high-end market. TEAC products appeal to discerning buyers who value heritage, build quality, and sonic authenticity over mass-market appeal, positioning the brand as a respected mid-to-premium player with particular strength among those seeking vintage and analog-focused solutions.
