Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The C26 is a notably well-equipped vintage McIntosh preamp, and US$1,406 is slightly ambitious rather than a bargain. Your comparable listings put the median at US$1,188 and the 75th percentile at US$1,387, so this ask sits just above the usual upper range. It would need excellent cosmetics, documented service, or especially desirable originality to justify the premium.

When healthy, the C26 remains an appealing choice for a classic two-channel system: its smooth, full-bodied presentation, dual phono inputs, flexible tone and filter controls, tape loops, and sturdy construction give it considerably more usefulness than many period preamps. The main question is condition—this is a 1968–1978 design, so balanced channels, quiet controls, clean switching, intact glass and lamps, and credible service history matter. At US$1,406, buy only if those boxes are clearly checked; otherwise, negotiate toward the median.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
