Are you buying a particularly good phono stage at a sensible price, or simply paying a premium for a serviced example? At £700, this sits just above the 75th-percentile comparable price of £664 and well above the £351 median, so it is ambitious rather than an obvious bargain. The price needs to be justified by excellent condition, documented servicing, and complete accessories.
The PS1.2SE is a serious valve phono stage, with separate power supply, point-to-point wiring, stereo/mono switching, and strong MM performance; versions equipped with the optional transformers also support MC cartridges. The hand-wired, no-feedback design and robust overload margin are attractive for revealing systems and difficult records. “Serviced” is encouraging, but ask exactly what was replaced, confirm the MC transformer option is fitted if needed, and verify quiet operation before paying above-market money.

Genelec, a Finnish audio pioneer, was co-founded in 1978 by Ilpo Martikainen and Topi Partanen in the scenic town of Iisalmi. From its modest lab origins, the company quickly established itself through innovations like the S30, its inaugural active monitor, embodying Finnish engineering precision and a commitment to solving real-world audio challenges for professionals.
The brand specializes in active loudspeaker systems, renowned for studio recording, mixing, mastering, broadcast, and film production. Genelec's portfolio emphasizes powered monitors with cutting-edge features such as smart technology, immersive audio capabilities, and sustainable design, including recent models like the 6040R that blend pure sound with elegant Finnish aesthetics. While not delving into passive speakers, turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables, their focus remains laser-sharp on professional-grade monitoring tools.
Genelec holds a commanding position as a global leader in high-end professional audio, trusted in the world's top studios for its uncompromising transparency, accuracy, and longevity. Far from mid-tier or vintage collector fare, it represents a niche pinnacle of boutique excellence, where acoustic innovation meets environmental responsibility, appealing to discerning engineers and producers who demand reference-level performance.
