Seller's Description

Pro-Ject DS2 Phono Preamplifier Project DS2 in silver and walnut. Attractive and in excellent condition. I agree with all the online, very complimentary reviews. Mind you I rolled the OEM tubes to 5751 USA matched pair. Makes delightful vinyl music with which I have been enormously happy. I have only used it in MM. I will include the 5751 tubes, rather than pull them out. The originals will also be included. If you wish to use your own tubes, then we can agree a revised figure I will be regretting this sale but I was offered a bundle package by my local Hifi dealer and I can’t keep both. I hav

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At A$730, this Pro-Ject DS2 Phono Preamplifier sits just below the median of A$363 but well under the 75th percentile of A$828 in the current AUD market, making it a fair-to-slightly-ambitious price for excellent condition. Wait—actually, the median is A$363, so A$730 is nearly double that and clearly above the median, placing it closer to the 75th percentile; it’s not a bargain, but it’s not egregiously overpriced either. Given the listing states “excellent” condition, this is a reasonable ask for a well-regarded, highly adjustable phono stage that handles both MM and MC cartridges with dual-mono construction and RIAA-accurate equalization.

The DS2 is prized for its transparent sound, strong dynamics, and flexible impedance/capacitance settings, offering a significant upgrade over built-in phono stages. With new units historically around A$599–A$650 (Sydney Hi-Fi, Class A Audio), this used listing at A$730 in excellent condition is slightly above new retail but justifiable if it includes the original power supply and shows no signs of wear. No caveats apply here—this is a solid buy for enthusiasts seeking a versatile, high-performance phono preamp without tube complexity.

About Pro-Ject

Pro-Ject Audio Systems traces its roots to 1991 in Austria's Weinviertel region, north of Vienna, where founder Heinz Lichtenegger launched the brand amid the CD revolution. Kicked out of music school as a youth, Lichtenegger channeled his passion for analog sound into affordable, high-quality turntables at a time when vinyl seemed obsolete. His debut Pro-Ject 1, hand-assembled in the Czech Republic, earned rave reviews as a top high-end device, igniting a success story that relocated headquarters to Vienna before returning to Mistelbach in Lower Austria.

The brand excels in turntables, establishing itself as the world's largest and leading producer in that category, while expanding into a full spectrum of hi-fi components since 2000. Offerings include amplifiers, DACs, headphone amps, speakers, cables, and phono stages, all emphasizing essential sound reproduction with durable materials and minimalist design. Manufacturing remains European—primarily in Czechia, Slovakia, and Germany—prioritizing sustainability through local sourcing, short transport, and products built for longevity.

Pro-Ject holds a commanding niche as the go-to for mid-tier audiophiles seeking boutique European craftsmanship without extravagant pricing. Distributed in over 80 countries, it appeals to vinyl revivalists and discerning buyers who value analog purity, innovation, and value-driven performance over flashy excess, cementing its reputation as a pioneer in accessible high-fidelity.
