Rega Brio Clamshell – Pre-Loved Integrated Amplifier

A little piece of British hi-fi history.

The original Rega Brio, affectionately known as the 'Clamshell', is a true classic from Rega's early amplifier lineup. Housed in its distinctive cast-aluminium enclosure, this compact integrated amplifier combines minimalist design with the lively, engaging and wonderfully musical sound that made Rega a household name among hi-fi enthusiasts.

Don't let its modest size fool you. The Brio delivers an energetic, rhythmic and natural presentation that makes listening to music an absolute pleasure.

Featuring a built-in moving magnet phono stage, it's a fantastic partner for a turntable, while its additional analogue inputs make it equally at home with other hi-fi sources.

A charming example of classic British audio engineering, and a great opportunity to own an increasingly sought-after piece of Rega history.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

New, the current Rega Brio MK7 is around NZ$1,900, while the earlier Brio’s used-market median is NZ$910. At NZ$700, this is below the NZ$659–NZ$1,197 middle-market band’s lower edge and comfortably under the 25th-percentile threshold of NZ$659? Actually, NZ$700 sits just above that threshold, so it’s a good buy rather than a standout bargain. The price looks attractive if it’s working properly and complete.

The Brio remains a well-regarded, lively 50-watt integrated with a useful built-in moving-magnet phono stage, headphone output, and enough current to suit many real-world speakers. It is especially appealing for a compact vinyl-oriented system where you want engaging sound without extra boxes. Because the condition is unspecified, confirm both channels, phono input, headphone socket, remote, and any hum or crackling before paying; at NZ$700, a clean example with its accessories is worth pursuing.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Rega

Rega Research, founded in 1973 in Essex, England, by Roy Gandy and Tony Relph, emerged from Gandy's lifelong passion for vinyl playback. A Ford engineer and music enthusiast, Gandy built his first turntable, the Planet, in his spare time, blending the founders' surnames to create the Rega name. From humble beginnings in a derelict mill, the company quickly gained traction with early models like the Planar 2 and Planar 3, establishing its heritage as a British hi-fi pioneer dedicated to precision engineering and hand-assembly.

Rega specializes in turntables and tonearms, its cornerstone products, but has expanded into a full ecosystem including cartridges, integrated amplifiers like the Elicit and Brio, phono stages such as the Fono, and speakers like the Ela series. While early efforts included loudspeakers and electronics from the 1980s onward, the brand prioritizes vinyl-centric components over headphones, DACs, or cables, all designed in-house for musical fidelity using specialist materials and tight tolerances.

Rega holds a revered position in the high-end hi-fi market as a niche boutique icon, prized by audiophiles for affordable, lifetime-quality performance that emphasizes music over gimmicks. Globally exported to over 50 countries from its Essex facility employing more than 150, it remains a symbol of British ingenuity, with turntables like the Planar series securing enduring loyalty among vinyl revivalists.
