Are you getting the complete, compatible system—or just a bass module? At €175, this is clearly above the €103 median and €131 75th-percentile asking price from 12 recent comparables, so it is ambitious rather than a bargain. “Excellent” condition helps, but it does not justify paying roughly €44 above the upper quartile unless the exact generation and accessories add real value.
The Acoustimass 5 module remains appealing for compact, room-filling bass and its unobtrusive footprint, particularly when paired with the correct Bose cube arrays. It is not a modern powered subwoofer: it uses speaker-level connections, passive filtering, and needs the matching satellites to make sense, while its nominal 4-ohm load deserves an amplifier that is comfortable with that demand. At this price, insist on a clean test with both channels working, no rattles or distortion, and confirmation that the required cables and satellites are included—or negotiate closer to €130.

Bose Corporation traces its roots to 1964, when MIT professor Amar Gopal Bose founded the company in Natick, Massachusetts, after growing disillusioned with the poor performance of a high-end stereo system he purchased as a graduate student. Driven by a passion for replicating the immersive qualities of live music through rigorous acoustic research, Bose launched the venture with initial contracts for the U.S. military and NASA, emphasizing innovative speaker designs that prioritized indirect, reverberant sound over direct radiation. This American heritage, rooted in psychoacoustics and engineering excellence, has defined the brand's pursuit of "Better Sound Through Research."
Bose excels in consumer and professional audio categories, renowned for its home audio systems, premium speakers like the iconic 901 Series, and pioneering noise-canceling headphones first prototyped in the 1980s for pilots. The lineup extends to vehicle sound systems, portable Bluetooth speakers, and professional installations, but steers clear of niche hi-fi components such as amplifiers, turntables, DACs, or cables, focusing instead on integrated, user-friendly solutions that blend advanced signal processing with spatial audio reproduction.
Positioned as a premium mid-tier powerhouse in the global market, Bose commands widespread appeal among discerning buyers seeking accessible high-performance audio without audiophile esoterica. Its reputation for innovation and reliability has built a loyal following, though purists occasionally critique its measured sound signature, cementing Bose as a dominant force in mainstream hi-fi rather than high-end boutique or vintage realms.
