Why Choose the Bowers and Wilkins CM5 S2 Bookshelf Speakers?

The Bowers & Wilkins CM5 S2 bring CM Series refinement into a practical stand-mount format suited to both dedicated two-channel and multi-channel systems.

• Clean, Extended Treble: Decoupled aluminium dome and Nautilus loading reduce distortion and cabinet colouration.

• Natural Midrange Texture: Kevlar cone with Anti-Resonance Plug controls break-up in the voice band.

• Easy Amplifier Matching: 8 Ω nominal load and 30–120 W recommended power.

• Low Distortion Design: Harmonic distortion below 0.5 % from 150 Hz to 20 kHz at 90 dB.

• Premium Finish: Real-wood Rosenut veneer that ages gracefully.

Audition the Bowers and Wilkins CM5 S2 at our Lane Cove showroom to appreciate their imaging, speed and well-mannered bass.

Frequency response is 52 Hz – 22 kHz (±3 dB) with a 4 kHz crossover. Horizontal dispersion remains within 2 dB over a 60° arc, while the Flowport and carefully braced cabinet keep the presentation clean even at higher levels.

Measuring 340 × 200 × 301 mm (with grille/terminals) and weighing 8.9 kg each, the CM5 S2 are compact enough for stands or shelves yet substantial enough for serious two-channel listening.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At A$1,200, this is a little above the recent used-market norm rather than a standout bargain: the median is A$1,133, with the upper quartile at A$1,167. It is therefore a mildly ambitious ask, though not wildly out of line if the pair is exceptionally clean and complete.

The CM5 S2 remains a very capable standmount, combining B&W’s detailed decoupled aluminium tweeter with a lively 165mm Kevlar mid/bass driver. It offers good sensitivity and convincing clarity, especially with vocals and acoustic material, while remaining compact and easy to place. At this price, confirm both original grilles, undamaged tweeter domes, clean terminals, and working drivers; otherwise, negotiating toward A$1,100–A$1,150 would make the purchase substantially more attractive.

About Bowers & Wilkins

Bowers & Wilkins traces its origins to 1966 in Worthing, West Sussex, England, when John Bowers, a passionate audio enthusiast and former electronics shop owner, founded the company with the help of a £10,000 bequest from a satisfied customer, Miss Knight. Bowers, who had honed his speaker-building skills as a hobby while running a radio and TV rental shop with partner Roy Wilkins, launched the venture from the back of that very shop. This modest beginning fueled a relentless pursuit of audio perfection, establishing Bowers & Wilkins as a British icon in high-fidelity sound reproduction.

The brand excels in premium loudspeakers, from flagship studio monitors like the legendary 801 series—adopted by Abbey Road Studios in 1979—to accessible Domestic Monitor lines such as the enduring 600 Series. Its portfolio has expanded to encompass high-end headphones, including the iconic P5 and Zeppelin designs, alongside wireless speakers and formation systems, all emphasizing advanced driver technology, precision cabinetry, and Continuum cones for unparalleled clarity.

Positioned firmly in the high-end market, Bowers & Wilkins commands respect among discerning audiophiles for its engineering excellence, musical accuracy, and heritage of innovation. Far from mid-tier or niche, it rivals the elite, blending cutting-edge research from facilities like Steyning with a reputation for reference-grade performance that defines luxury hi-fi.
