Samsung’s DVD-S222 is a straightforward, well-regarded budget player from the era when DVD decks also served reliably as CD and MP3 transports. At USD69, this is a fair-to-good buy, sitting below the USD87 median and comfortably above the USD57 25th percentile among 489 comparable listings. It is not a spectacular bargain, but the price is sensible for a tested unit with its remote.
The appeal is versatility: DVD playback, conventional CDs, MP3 discs, Dolby Digital/DTS support, and Phantom Surround in a compact, uncomplicated package. A working original remote adds real value, especially for menu navigation and audio settings. Confirm that the tray opens smoothly, CDs and DVDs load without repeated retries, the display works, and the remote controls the player properly. If all that checks out, USD69 is a reasonable enthusiast buy rather than an inflated vintage-electronics ask.

Samsung Electronics, founded in 1969 in Suwon, South Korea, by Lee Byung-chull, began as part of the Samsung Group with a vision embodied in its name—"three stars"—symbolizing power, abundance, and enduring brilliance. Initially focused on electronics like black-and-white televisions and semiconductors, the company rapidly expanded into consumer appliances, earning global recognition in the 1970s for mass-producing home electronics that set industry standards for reliability and innovation.
In hi-fi audio, Samsung's direct offerings emphasize integrated soundbars, wireless speakers, and headphones optimized for its Galaxy ecosystem and QLED televisions, prioritizing seamless connectivity and immersive home theater experiences over standalone components. Through its subsidiary Harman International—acquired in 2017—Samsung commands a vast portfolio including JBL, Harman Kardon, AKG, and, following the 2025 $350 million purchase of Sound United, premium brands like Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Marantz, Polk Audio, and Definitive Technology. This arsenal spans amplifiers, turntables, DACs, and high-end speakers, blending legacy hi-fi engineering with modern DSP and streaming.
Positioned as a dominant mid-to-premium market force rather than a pure high-end boutique, Samsung leverages scale and ecosystem integration to deliver accessible excellence, appealing to discerning buyers seeking value-driven performance without niche esoterica. Its aggressive acquisitions have reshaped the audio landscape, making it a pivotal player for hi-fi enthusiasts prioritizing versatility and future-proofing over vintage exclusivity.
