The age matters: this is the original Mini-i generation, now several iterations behind the current mini-i 4, so it should be bought as a capable older DAC rather than a modern streamer. At £271, though, it sits just above the £254 median and below the £308 75th percentile—fair, but not an obvious bargain. The unknown condition makes confirmation of accessories and operation worthwhile before paying the full asking price.
It remains a worthwhile buy for a system needing balanced outputs, AES/EBU, optical and coaxial inputs, plus a useful headphone output and volume control. Its 24-bit/192kHz performance over conventional inputs and lively, clear presentation still make sense in a traditional digital setup. Check that USB’s older 48kHz ceiling suits your use, and verify the display, controls, outputs and remote; with clean cosmetics and everything included, £271 is reasonable, though a little negotiation would improve it.

Matrix Audio traces its roots to Xi'an, China, where three high school classmates bonded over music and audio tinkering in the early 2000s. Their passion led to building homemade speakers during a 2001 summer holiday, evolving into formal collaboration after university in 2006 with the debut of the groundbreaking DAC DA-100Plus. The brand was officially registered in 2013 under Matrix Electronic Technology Co., LTD, embodying the founders' vision of balancing sonic precision and aesthetic harmony—reflected in the "matrix" name, drawn from mathematics, and their slogan "Into The Music."
The company specializes in high-performance digital audio source devices, starting with DACs and headphone amplifiers like the best-selling mini-i series. From 2016, they expanded into streaming solutions with companion apps, and by 2018 introduced integrated music streamers featuring power amplification, quad-core processors, and MA Player software. Today, their lineup emphasizes all-in-one Hi-Fi components that blend research, design, and manufacturing in-house, prioritizing seamless integration into modern homes.
Matrix Audio holds a strong position as a mid-to-high-end contender, prized for exceptional value, engineering excellence, and user-friendly execution that rivals legacy brands. Globally recognized for sound quality, build, and minimalist design, it appeals to discerning enthusiasts seeking complete digital ecosystems without complexity, earning acclaim from audiophiles worldwide.
