At €1,080, this is the obvious alternative to a cheaper DIY plate amp, but it sits above the normal used market: the four comparable listings put the median at €898 and the 75th percentile at €944. That makes the asking price ambitious rather than a bargain, even in excellent condition.
The SPA1000 is a serious, high-output subwoofer amplifier, delivering roughly 497 W into 8 ohms and 950 W into 4 ohms, with useful parametric EQ, phase control, soft clipping, and substantial thermal protection. It is well suited to a large cinema or DIY subwoofer where clean headroom matters. At this price, the premium needs justification through genuinely excellent cosmetic and electrical condition, confirmed 230 V compatibility, and ideally original accessories or a strong return option. Otherwise, negotiating toward the €900–€950 range would make it much more compelling.

Dayton Audio emerged over three decades ago as a specialist in audio components, with roots firmly in the United States where most engineering and development occurs. While specific founding details remain unverified, the brand has built its heritage on loudspeaker design and production, manufacturing goods across North America, Europe, and Asia to balance quality and accessibility. This American-led approach has positioned it as a reliable source for practical hi-fi solutions since at least the early 1990s.
The company focuses primarily on loudspeaker drivers and related components, offering transducers in sizes from 3 to 12 inches that rival premium models in performance. Its Designer Series emphasizes full power handling at low frequencies without exceeding excursion limits, ideal for custom enclosures. Dayton also produces plate amplifiers suited to bespoke builds, catering to DIY enthusiasts and manufacturers seeking high-value drivers over complete systems like amplifiers, turntables, or headphones.
Dayton Audio holds a strong mid-tier position in the market, delivering engaging sound and robust quality akin to high-end brands but at budget prices. Esteemed by hobbyists and builders for competing with the world's finest drivers, it thrives in the value-driven segment, appealing to knowledgeable buyers prioritizing performance per dollar over luxury branding.
