The McIntosh C20 is a classic vintage stereo vacuum tube preamplifier made by McIntosh Laboratory between 1959 and 1963. Known as McIntosh's first stereophonic tube control center, it amplifies weak audio signals, shapes tone balance, and precedes the famous C22. McIntosh +3Key Specifications & FeaturesTube Complement: Uses five 12AX7, two 12AU7, and one 6X4 vacuum tube.Record Compensation: Offers multiple equalization and compensation settings for vintage mono and early stereo records.Inputs & Outputs: Includes phono, auxiliary, tape head, and tuner inputs with flexible tape monitoring.Build Style: Features a signature black and gold faceplate (with later variants incorporating glass panels) and weighs around 28.5 poundsI would call the condition excellent except for a hairline crack in the front faceplate and as you know Mcintosh does not produce replacements, other than that the preamp is in beautiful condition. Just checked out by my tech and a couple of capacitors were changed out but the rest is mostly original and ready to go. I added some feet to prevent scratching and banging of the face and sides.
Unknown condition is the key qualifier, but at US$3,000 this C20 is a strong deal against the supplied market: it sits below the US$2,875–US$3,950 middle 50% only marginally, yet remains well under the US$3,648 median. That price is especially attractive if the unit is complete, working quietly, and has documented service rather than merely powering on.
The C20 is a highly flexible vintage tube preamplifier, with unusually comprehensive phono equalization, mono/stereo compatibility, tape monitoring, and a characterful, involving presentation. McIntosh built these from 1959–1966, so age-related capacitor, control, tube, and power-supply work is the meaningful check; an unrestored example may need competent servicing before regular use. Confirm the cabinet, original tubes, glass, controls, and recent technician’s invoice. At this price, a healthy or properly restored example is a genuine buying opportunity.
