Seller's Description

Here it is, the Conrad Johnson Premier One 200 watts per channel tube amplifier. Six 6550 output tubes operate each channel. I have played this with both a solid state and a tube preamp, it sounds marvelous with either one. EXTMEMELY heavy. 135 lbs. Shipping will be in a solid wood container with plenty of cushioning. I would rather not ship it. I will deliver in the Western United States for the same cost as the shipping estimate or meet a buyer 1/2 way. ALL QUALITY Tunsol output tubes. If shipped and buyer is not satisfied, full refund will apply but buer will need to pay the return shipping.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

At US$6,850, this is dramatically overpriced against the recent market: the median is US$2,697, with even the 75th percentile only US$3,000. Unless this is an unusually exceptional, fully restored pair—or the listing has a major detail missing—the asking price is not competitive.

The Premier 8 remains a serious vintage tube monoblock, offering enormous power, authoritative bass, and the smooth, musical Conrad-Johnson presentation. The 8-A uses eight 6550 output tubes and delivers 275 watts, making it particularly attractive for difficult speaker loads. But this is an old, tube-heavy design: verify the exact version, operating condition, tube health, biasing, service history, and whether the listing is for one amplifier or a pair. At this price, excellent cosmetics alone do not justify the premium.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Conrad-Johnson

Conrad-Johnson emerged in the mid-1970s from the dissatisfaction of two American economists and audiophiles, Dr. William Conrad and Dr. Lewis Johnson, with the inconsistent performance of contemporary amplifiers. Founded in the United States, the company launched its inaugural product, the all-vacuum-tube PV-1 preamplifier, in 1977, quickly earning critical acclaim and establishing a benchmark for musicality. This debut propelled Conrad-Johnson into the forefront of the tube renaissance, with the iconic MV75 power amplifier following in 1978, solidifying its heritage as a pioneer in high-end audio craftsmanship.

The brand specializes in vacuum-tube preamplifiers and power amplifiers, renowned for their warm, engaging sound that prioritizes musical satisfaction over sterile measurements. While tube designs remain its cornerstone, Conrad-Johnson expanded into solid-state amplifiers and phonostages in the 1980s, alongside limited ventures like the Sonographe turntable line and electronics acquired in the late 1980s. All components are hand-built in the USA using simple circuits and premium custom parts, reflecting over four decades of refined design philosophy.

Conrad-Johnson holds an exalted position in the high-end market as an American classic, beloved by audiophiles for gear that "just sounds right." Its products command lust among enthusiasts worldwide, blending vintage appeal with sustained relevance, and consistently rank among the most musically rewarding options available.
