Up for sale is a classic, powerful Carver Receiver 2000. Physically and cosmically, the unit is in very clean condition, and it includes the highly sought-after original factory remote control.Operational Status: The receiver powers on and plays music across channels, but it has a pronounced 60Hz background power supply hum that will require a capacitor rebuild/re-cap job to resolve. Selling strictly AS-IS for parts or repair to an audio enthusiast, collector, or bench technician capable of servicing Bob Carver's magnetic field circuitry.Wood side panels included but one corner would need some attention. Remote control and a copy of the manual also to go with receiver. All dials and knobs are there. I used this unit regularly but for the hum when idle, it sounds wonderful. Just time to move along.Shipping/Terms: Unit is heavy (approx. 40 lbs). Will be packed with extreme care using heavy-duty padding. All sales final.
This is a buyer’s market for vintage high-powered receivers, and USD 499 is fair to slightly attractive for a working Carver MXR-2000—not a steal, but below some current asks around USD 697–780 and above examples near USD 300–375. The price makes sense if it is demonstrably tested; without condition details, it is difficult to call it a bargain.
The appeal is substantial: this 1980s receiver delivers a genuine 200 watts per channel, has a respected tuner, phono input, Sonic Holography, and enough current for demanding speakers. It is also unusually versatile, with separable preamp/power-amp sections. At this money, prioritize a clean front panel, working display and controls, both channels operating evenly, quiet protection behavior, and intact pre/main jumpers. A serviced example with those checks would be a worthwhile buy.

Founded in 1979 in the United States by audio innovator Bob Carver, a physicist and engineer from the Pacific Northwest, the Carver brand emerged from his earlier work at Phase Linear, where he designed groundbreaking amplifiers like the 1972 Phase Linear 700—the most powerful consumer amp of its era. Carver Corporation quickly built on this foundation, delivering hand-crafted amplifiers that combined cutting-edge technology with immense power at accessible prices, revolutionizing high-fidelity sound for everyday enthusiasts.
Carver specialized in power amplifiers, preamplifiers, and integrated systems, earning acclaim for magnetic field amplification and other proprietary designs that prioritized performance over luxury pricing. The brand expanded into professional audio with Carver Professional in 1984 and home cinema via Sunfire in 1994, while maintaining a core focus on robust, high-output electronics rather than speakers, turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables.
Positioned as a populist force in the hi-fi market, Carver brought audiophile-grade power to the middle class, rivaling elite brands at a fraction of the cost and fostering a loyal following among vintage collectors today. Though corporate shifts and the 2024 closure of Bob Carver Corp marked challenges, its legacy endures as mid-tier innovation that democratized excellence, now overseen by Carver Holdings Group.
