About this model
The Pioneer PL-340 is a fully automatic belt drive turntable made in Japan between 1983 and 1984. It pairs a high-torque brushless DC servo Hall motor with a 33 cm aluminium die-cast platter, running at 33 and 45 RPM with ±2% fine speed adjustment. The static-balance S-shaped tone arm uses a mass concentration system and features auto return and auto stop, and the deck was originally fitted with a Pioneer PC-5MC moving magnet cartridge. A coaxial suspension cabinet helps resist howling, and the PL-340 was part of the Pioneer X-A 5 system.

A great opportunity to own a Pioneer PL-340 at this price point.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The PL-340 has a respectable place among Pioneer’s affordable automatic decks, and at USD 106 this is a strong deal. It sits just above the USD 103 25th-percentile mark and well below the USD 196 median for recent comparable listings, making the price attractive rather than merely fair.

Its appeal is straightforward: automatic operation, a competent Pioneer tonearm, useful speed adjustment, and a sensible, easy-to-live-with design. Manuals add welcome value, especially for setting up the controls and transport. Before buying, confirm that the platter reaches speed, the arm cycles through start and return correctly, and the stylus is serviceable; an old belt or stylus is normal maintenance rather than a reason to reject this price. If it operates as described, this looks like a worthwhile entry-level vintage purchase.

About Pioneer

Pioneer traces its roots to 1937 in Tokyo, Japan, when founder Nozomu Matsumoto, inspired by the thrill of imported hi-fi speakers, developed the A-8 dynamic speaker and launched a radio and speaker repair shop. The business formalized as Fukuin Shokai Denki Seisakusho in 1938, evolving into Pioneer Corporation and embodying Matsumoto's philosophy of "Move the Heart and Touch the Soul" through audio innovation.

The brand excels across diverse hi-fi categories, pioneering Japan's first headphones in 1960 with the SE-1 and the world's first component-based stereo system in 1965 via the PSC-5A. Pioneer's portfolio spans amplifiers, speakers, turntables, and DACs, alongside landmark car audio advancements like the 1975 Supertuner-equipped stereo and the 1986 in-car CD player, blending home and automotive excellence.

Today, Pioneer holds a commanding mid-to-high-tier position in the market, revered for reliable, performance-driven gear that balances premium quality with accessibility. Its vintage components attract collectors, while current offerings appeal to discerning buyers seeking robust, innovative sound reproduction without boutique excess.
