The Valencia 846B is one of Altec’s most admired domestic designs: essentially a high-sensitivity, horn-loaded classic with serious scale and immediacy. At EUR 2,800, this is fair to slightly ambitious rather than a bargain; documented used examples cluster around roughly EUR 1,500–EUR 2,500 per pair, while especially well-serviced examples can reach higher. The price needs strong condition and originality to justify it.
When right, the 416 woofer and 811B horn deliver huge dynamics, vivid vocals, effortless volume, and convincing bass from modest amplification. This is a worthwhile buy if the drivers, diaphragms, cabinets, and original N801 crossovers are in good shape, with matching serials and sensible service history. Originality matters more than cosmetic perfection, though upgraded or rebuilt crossovers can add real value. At EUR 2,800, insist on an in-person audition and verify that both speakers are properly balanced and free of rubbing or distortion.
