At £517, this Lehmann Audio Black Cube sits above the £404 median and £471 upper quartile of recent used asking prices, so it is ambitious rather than an obvious bargain. Unless it is an especially late, immaculate example with the correct external power supply, a little negotiation would make the value more convincing.
That said, the Black Cube remains a serious, versatile phono stage: its passive RIAA circuit, low-noise gain stages, and adjustable gain/loading accommodate a broad range of MM and MC cartridges, while its strengths are speed, dynamics, clarity, and an expansive soundstage. The external supply and proper shielded cable are essential, so confirm both are included and working. At around £450 it would look much more attractive; at £517, condition and completeness need to be excellent.

Lehmann Audio traces its roots to 1988, when Norbert Lehmann, then a young sound engineering student and guitarist in Cologne, Germany, founded the company—initially under the name Entec—driven by a passion for faithful music reproduction. From his studies, Lehmann identified critical factors like power, signal-to-noise ratio, and low distortion as essentials for high-fidelity audio, shaping the brand's engineering philosophy from the outset.
The company specializes in a focused lineup of high-end components, renowned for headphone amplifiers such as the Linear, Studio/Stage series, and innovative models like the Drachenfels, alongside phono stages starting with the acclaimed Black Cube in 1995. It also offers power amplifiers, drawing technology from pro-audio applications, but eschews broader categories like speakers, turntables, DACs, or headphones.
Lehmann Audio holds a niche boutique position in the high-end hi-fi market, celebrated for its expert German engineering, award-winning performance, and consistent praise in international reviews. With over three decades of refinement, it appeals to discerning audiophiles seeking precise, distortion-free sound in compact, pro-grade separates.
