Lavardin’s A80 Reference is a particularly well-regarded, low-memory-design power amplifier, valued for its neutrality, resolution and finely judged micro-dynamics. At £1,695, this is a strong deal: it sits comfortably below the £2,367 25th-percentile comparable, and well under the £2,703 median for recent used examples.
Its modest power rating is no handicap with sympathetic, reasonably sensitive speakers; the appeal is control, transparency and musical delicacy rather than brute force. The Reference version brings upgraded circuitry and power supply over the standard A80, with a wider, sharper and more resolved presentation. Check that the amplifier is fully functional and confirm what is included, but at this price a clean example looks like a genuine buying opportunity.

Lavardin Technologies emerged in September 1996 from the visionary research of Gérard Perrot, who spent eight years tackling transistor memory distortion—a subtle audio flaw long overlooked by the industry. Based in Ternay, Loire Valley, France, near the medieval village of Lavardin that inspired its name, the company was co-founded with Jean-Christophe Crozel. Their breakthrough circuits minimize this distortion by over a thousandfold, rivaling tube amplifiers' natural purity while harnessing solid-state precision.
The brand specializes exclusively in high-end amplifiers, crafting integrated models like the legendary IT, IS Reference, and newer X series, alongside power amplifiers. Every unit features proprietary Memory Free technology, manual assembly with around 360 components per amplifier, and 100% French manufacturing. Lavardin eschews speakers, DACs, turntables, or cables, focusing solely on amplification that delivers unparalleled transparency and dynamism.
Positioned as a niche boutique in the ultra-high-end market, Lavardin commands reverence among discerning audiophiles for its zero-compromise ethos, cult status, and unanimous critical acclaim. With limited production and no marketing hype, it appeals to buyers seeking effortless neutrality and power, often hailed as a "garden of Eden" in hi-fi circles.
