Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The 551’s age matters: this is a roughly early-1990s Meridian design, not a current-generation amplifier. At US$950, it is ambitious, sitting well above the recent comparable median of US$661 and 75th percentile of US$670. Unless this example has unusually strong provenance, recent servicing, or desirable options, the asking price is difficult to justify.

That said, the 551 remains a serious, thoughtfully engineered integrated: its rhythmic control, clean preamplifier section, adjustable inputs, and roughly 65 watts per channel make it a capable partner for revealing speakers. Optional MM/MC phono modules add useful flexibility, while the compact build and Meridian system connectivity are genuine strengths. At this price, insist on clear evidence of service, quiet operation, reliable display and controls, and confirmation of the phono configuration; a healthy example would make more sense closer to the established market range.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Meridian

Meridian Audio, founded in 1977 in Cambridgeshire, England, by industrial designer Allen Boothroyd and engineer Bob Stuart, emerged as a trailblazer in high-end audio. From its inception as Boothroyd Stuart, the company quickly distinguished itself through relentless innovation, pioneering digital signal processing (DSP) and becoming the first to deliver high-resolution digital active loudspeakers for domestic use, such as the groundbreaking M1 and D600 models.
