Extract from a review below: THE VERDICT "With a big-hearted, rhythm-loving presentation, Onkyo's A-9050 offers an awful lot of sound per Pound. Yet it's still surprisingly smooth and civilised too, as well as showing few outward signs of being a bargain-basement product aside from its slightly lightweight build. It's a testament to the skills at the Japanese giant's UK division that they've been able to squeeze so much out of this dinky design. To quote the wisdom of one Joey Tribbiani, “you're so far past the line that you can't even see the line! The line is a dot to you!” Some specs below: • 150 Watts (75 watts per channel @ 8 ohms) • • Speakers A,B &A+B –can drive four speakers simultaneously • • Supports 4 ohms and 8 ohms speakers • • Optical Digital input x1 • • Coaxial Digital input x2 • • Phase matching bass function • • DAC: Wolfson 192 kHz/24-bit (WM8718) • • DIDRC technology to reduce noise • • Frequency Response: 10 Hz–100 kHz (+1 dB, -3 dB) • Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR): 110 dB (Line), 80 dB (Phono MM) • • Phono input • • 5 Analog Audio Inputs (4 Rear / 1 Front) and 1 Output (Rear) • • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) with Discrete Amplifier Output Circuitry • • High-Current Low-Impedance Drive • • Four Audio-Grade Capacitors • • Extruded Aluminium Heat Sink • • Thick Speaker Plates To Maintain Signal Quality • • Gold-Plated Screw-type Banana Plug-Compatible Speaker Posts • • Automatic Digital Circuitry Shutdown Function for Pure Analog Sound • • Tone Controls (Bass/Treble/Balance) • • Phono Input (MM) and Phono Equalizer
The A-9050 is a notably well-equipped, straightforward integrated rather than a merely basic amplifier. At US$459, this example is above the five-listing median of US$399 and also exceeds the 75th-percentile asking price of US$431, so it looks ambitious unless the condition, accessories, and testing are especially strong.
Its appeal is real: 75 watts per channel, a useful MM phono stage, plentiful analogue inputs, optical and coaxial digital inputs, a built-in Wolfson DAC, speaker A/B switching, and pre-outs for later expansion. It is clean, detailed, and has convincing bass weight, making it a versatile choice for a mixed digital/analogue system. At this price, insist on a working remote, both channels remaining clean under load, quiet controls, and confirmed digital and phono operation; otherwise, negotiating toward the US$399 median would make more sense.

Onkyo traces its roots to postwar Japan, founded in 1946 in Osaka by Takeshi Goda, an engineer at Matsushita Electric who envisioned high-quality Japanese loudspeakers. Initially established as Osaka Denki Onkyo K.K., the company began production in 1948 with the acclaimed ED-100 speaker featuring a 25 cm driver, quickly building a reputation through LP concerts and innovative designs that resonated with audiophiles.
The brand excels in premium home audio, renowned for AV receivers, hi-fi amplifiers, and surround sound speakers that deliver exceptional clarity and power. Its portfolio spans turntables, DACs, headphones, and cables, bolstered by acquisitions like Pioneer's home electronics division in 2015, enabling cutting-edge integrations such as internet radio and high-resolution streaming.
Onkyo holds a solid mid-tier position in the hi-fi market, prized by discerning buyers for reliable performance and value rather than ultra-high-end exotica. Despite bankruptcy challenges in the late 2010s, its revival under new ownership preserves a legacy of technological innovation and pure sound enjoyment, appealing to both vintage enthusiasts and modern home cinema setups.
