Our Thoughts RADAR AI

The H400 is Hegel’s powerful “sweet spot” integrated: a 250W-per-channel Class AB design with a built-in DAC and modern streaming. At £4,250, though, this is ambitious rather than a bargain—it sits well above the 75th-percentile asking price of £2,428, against a £1,480 median from 134 comparable listings. Even allowing for excellent condition and packaging, that premium needs strong justification.

The appeal is substantial: dual-mono power, very high speaker control, stability into difficult 2-ohm loads, and a genuinely useful all-in-one feature set including Roon Ready, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay and Google Cast. Box and remote are worthwhile inclusions, but they do not bridge such a large market gap. At this price, buy only with exceptional provenance, near-new condition and meaningful dealer support; otherwise, patience should uncover a materially better-value example.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Hegel

Hegel Music Systems traces its roots to 1988 at the Technical University in Trondheim, Norway, where student Bent Holter founded the company as part of his thesis on revolutionary transistor amplifier design. Targeting distortion—the bane of traditional hi-fi—Holter developed the patented SoundEngine technology, laying the groundwork for Hegel's enduring innovation. From modest beginnings in the early 1990s, with early DACs in 1994 and CD players by 1996, the brand expanded steadily, even hiring engineers amid the financial crisis to pioneer advanced D/A converters.

Hegel's product lineup centers on high-end electronics, excelling in integrated, pre-, and power amplifiers that deliver effortless power and precision. They also produce sophisticated standalone DACs, CD players, and phono stages, emphasizing digital integration and streaming capabilities. Manufacturing occurs in China, while Norway handles all design, circuit development, testing, and software.

Positioned firmly in the high-end hi-fi market, Hegel commands a global reputation for musicality, neutrality, and build quality, with dealers in over 60 countries and accolades like the HiFi+ Innovation Award. Collectors and discerning audiophiles prize its no-nonsense Scandinavian engineering, bridging modern digital demands with analog purity in a competitive boutique landscape.
