Seller's Description

Vintage 80's JVC VP-100 / VP-100B "Digital Audio Processor"This was a clever unit back in the day, before DAT was fully mainstream and affordable. It allowed you to encode your analog audio into a digital video signal streamed to a standard VCR or BetaMax deck, and play back to decoder that signal into analog again. Very popular at the time for mixdown, archival, etc (again, DAT was not an option for most people).Used by countless smaller studio users and hi-fi home users alike. (I couldn't tell you how many archival backups I did!).* All the features and specs you could want are available online!-- Notes: Yes it still works! Just tested with a friend's vcr. * However, the display brightness occasionally dims out, then back in after a while, no rhyme or reason. From what I have researched, it would be caused by typical aging power supply capacitors (like any and all equipment from that era).-- So, I'm selling it very cheap as-is (no returns), since it's presumed you will service that (cheap parts, and again, routine for most gear this age). These are Very Rare and can sell for a LOT to vintage audio enthusiasts! I'm pricing it low for someone to dive into it and give it a good new home!

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Compared with the usual gamble on an untested vintage digital component, USD 90 is a strong deal: it sits below the USD 105 median and well below the USD 200 upper-quartile asking price, though not quite into the bargain tier represented by USD 60 and below.

The VP-100/VP-100B is an early PCM digital audio processor—an appealing, historically interesting component for vintage-digital enthusiasts and format experimenters rather than a modern plug-and-play DAC. Its rarity and period engineering give it worthwhile collecting appeal, and service documentation is available, which is a practical advantage. Because the listing says condition is unknown, insist on confirmation that it powers up, locks to a compatible digital source, and produces clean analog output; still, at USD 90, a working example is a very reasonable buy, with room for age-related maintenance.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About JVC

JVC, originally founded on September 13, 1927, in Yokohama, Japan, as the Victor Talking Machine Company of Japan, emerged as a subsidiary of the American Victor Talking Machine Company. It quickly established itself in phonograph and record production, becoming a leader in turntables within its first few years. After RCA acquired the parent company in 1929, JVC expanded into radios and introduced Japan's first domestically produced television in 1939, laying the foundation for its enduring legacy in consumer electronics.

The brand's product focus has historically centered on audio and video playback devices, starting with phonographs and evolving through radios, televisions, and the revolutionary VHS videocassette recorder launched in 1976, which became the global standard over Sony's Betamax. In hi-fi realms, JVC gained renown for amplifiers, speakers, turntables, and components like tuners, while later offerings included headphones and car audio systems. Following its 2008 merger with Kenwood to form JVCKenwood, it continued blending audio expertise with broader electronics.

Today, JVC occupies a solid mid-tier position in the hi-fi market, prized by enthusiasts for reliable, value-driven performance rather than ultra-high-end exclusivity. Its vintage gear, particularly from the wood-case amplifier era and early digital components, attracts collectors, while modern lines deliver competent sound without boutique pricing. This accessible heritage makes JVC a dependable choice for knowledgeable buyers seeking proven Japanese engineering.
