DIY Altec Lansing Floorstanding Loudspeakers PRICE REDUCED, REDUCED, REDUCED , FURTHER REDUCED. Last price drop ALMOST GONE .WIFE SAYS THEY ARE CLUTTERING MY SMALL SPACE. EOI TAKING OFFERS  AUDITIONING AVAILABLE  I was originally recommended by another SNAer to have Mark Houston (SNA) build an amp to drive my Gale 401’s. On auditioning his amps I was totally blown away by his personal setup with his power amp,  preamp and Altec MC511b horns. I had to have a setup just like it. I sourced the horns and so the process began.  The horns are driven by the Italian Faital HF108R compression drivers,

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

This is an ambitious ask. Against your own AUD comp set, A$1,300 sits far above the 75th percentile of A$319 and well past the median A$166, so it reads as a premium listing rather than a typical used buy.

The upside has to come from the actual build and execution: if these are genuinely well-done floorstanders with strong drivers, decent cabinetry, and no hidden work needed, the appeal is in getting serious output and vintage character for a lover’s system. That said, at this price I’d want proof of restoration quality, parts originality, and clean operation; for DIY builds, workmanship and crossover quality matter more than the badge.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Altec Lansing

Altec Lansing traces its roots to 1927 in the United States, emerging from the merger of Western Electric’s theater-equipment arm, All Technical Service Company, with Lansing Manufacturing, the speaker company founded by James B. Lansing. The Altec-Lansing name reflects that union, and the brand’s early reputation was built in cinema and professional sound rather than consumer hi-fi.

Historically, Altec Lansing was known for loudspeakers, theater systems, and audio amplifiers, especially the legendary Voice of the Theatre systems that became a benchmark in cinema sound. In its classic era, the company also helped define the early hi-fi market by promoting professional-style sound systems for home use.

In market terms, Altec Lansing is best understood today as a legacy heritage brand rather than a current high-end audiophile heavyweight. Its name still carries weight among collectors and vintage audio enthusiasts because of its pro-audio history and classic speaker designs, but the modern brand identity is far more mainstream and consumer-oriented than its mid-century golden age.
