Seller's Description

Leak Stereo 20 Power Amplifier Up for grabs is a very special opportunity, a beautifully original 1959 production Leak Stereo 20 power amplifier. The cosmetic condition is absolutely stunning for an amplifier of 65 years old and amazingly, it retains all of its original tubes (Mullard EL84, Mullard Long Plate F91 Halo Getter 12AX7's & Mullard GZ34) and more amazingly, its original box and reading materials. As close to a museum piece as you'll ever get. The amplifier was working perfectly well at my time of purchase ( approx. 2 years ago) and was destined for a quaint Quad ESL-57 system. Somet

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

This is a buyer’s market at A$2,000: that sits below the A$1,990–A$2,530 comparable band’s middle-to-upper area and close to the A$1,990 25th percentile, so it reads as a good buy rather than an ambitious ask. Against a A$2,257 median, you’re paying slightly under typical used-market value for this category, which gives you a bit of room if condition is honest and functioning.

The appeal is the usual one: these are well-liked for their muscular, classic valve sound, with real collector interest and strong demand when examples are tidy and original. If it’s complete, quiet, and hasn’t been heavily modified, the upside is in getting an iconic piece at a sensible price; just verify service history, hum/noise, and whether it’s ready to play, since age and output-stage wear matter more than cosmetics here.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About LEAK Stereo

Founded in 1934 by Harold Joseph Leak in London, England, LEAK emerged as a pioneering force in British hi-fi, initially crafting public address systems and cinema amplifiers before pivoting to high-fidelity home audio amid post-war innovation. With engineer Ted Ashley's contributions, the brand rode the 1950s hi-fi boom, producing landmark valve amplifiers like the TL/12 series, which set benchmarks for low distortion and performance, establishing LEAK as a global leader in affordable excellence.

LEAK specialized in integrated amplifiers, such as the iconic Stereo 20, Stereo 30, and Stereo 50, alongside innovative loudspeakers featuring the patented "Sandwich" foam-core drivers for precise bass and clarity. The lineup extended to radio tuners, pickups, tonearms, and turntables, blending valve warmth with emerging transistor tech to dominate the stereo era.

Acquired by the Rank Organisation in 1969 and dormant by the late 1970s amid Japanese competition, LEAK's revival under the IAG Group since 2020 honors its heritage with modern classics like the Stereo 130 and 230 integrated amplifiers, plus CD transports and streamers. Revered by vintage collectors for cult models like the Stereo 30, it holds mid-tier prestige today—delivering high-end British sound at accessible prices for discerning buyers seeking timeless refinement.
