Seller's Description

M.E 850 Power Amplifier Selling the last of my well documented ME collection. This particular 850 has been hardly used.  Some might remember this came from TAS with the collection that included many ME amplifiers some Duntech Sovereigns and the Krel KAS monos. It really is like new inside and out. It also has a wooden crate  I’m willing to do a very good price on the mint ME14 also listed as a combo.    Condition: Excellent Used Payment Method: Cash EFT Region/State: (VIC) Victoria/Australia By Jakeyb77_Redux 10 Comments   AUD $2,000 Date: May 17, 20241 yr

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Ambitious asking price at AUD 2,000 for this Duntech M.E 850 power amp—it's below our recent comps median of AUD 3,219 (ranging AUD 2,837–5,680 across six solid listings), but condition is unknown, which screams caution. Without photos or service history, it could be a steal if pristine, though Duntech gear from this era rarely dips under AUD 2,800 in tested shape; fair market leans higher for functional units.

Buyers, verify output transistors first—early Duntech amps like this suffer blown pairs from overheating or age (common past 30 years). Probe for original power cord, manual, and bias settings; insist on powered-up demo with scope on distortion. Skip if no recent recap or seller can't prove low hours.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Duntech

Duntech Audio traces its origins to John Dunlavy, who founded the company in Dallas, Texas in the late 1970s as Audio Standards before it became Duntech Audio. In 1981, the entire operation relocated to Adelaide, South Australia, where it established itself as a privately held, wholly Australian-owned corporation. The company's early history included expertise in antenna systems dating back to 1963, knowledge that informed its transition into high-end loudspeaker design. The company's first wall-mounted loudspeaker entered production in 1982, claimed as the world's first full-range, audiophile-quality design of its kind.

Duntech specializes exclusively in loudspeakers, positioning itself firmly in the ultra-premium segment. The brand gained international recognition with its flagship Sovereign 2001 loudspeaker, introduced in 1986 and retailing at $15,000 per pair. These towering, sealed-box designs became known for their time and phase coherence, earning praise from audio experts for reproduction described as "the closest approximation to the live musical event." The company's design philosophy emphasizes precision engineering and acoustic purity over conventional approaches.

Today, Duntech occupies a niche position as a boutique high-end manufacturer with significant collector and enthusiast appeal. Under current ownership since 2004, the brand has continued producing legacy Sovereign models while developing new designs including the Senator and Princess loudspeaker systems. Duntech maintains its reputation for uncompromising engineering standards and remains respected among discerning audiophiles who prioritize acoustic accuracy and heritage craftsmanship over mass-market accessibility.
