MBD's Summer Garage Sale.Time for the post-xmas cleanup of things I've been meaning to sell for a while. I'm not after top dollar, and believe this (and my other listings) are reasonably priced. If you feel like you can demonstrate why I'm incorrect, I welcome your offers or feedback. Please see ...
This is a deal only if you want it for parts; at A$100, it is below what a working pair of older VAF floorstanders usually justifies, but the “for parts” label means you should treat it as a driver-cabinet rescue or a donor buy rather than a normal speaker purchase. For a dead, incomplete, or heavily compromised set, A$100 is sensible; for anything needing real restoration, it’s only attractive if the cabinets and drivers are unusually salvageable.
The upside is that VAF’s better-known speakers have a strong reputation in Australia for imaging, smooth tonal balance, and solid build, so even an older pair can be worth saving if the enclosures are intact. The main thing to check is whether the fault is limited to an easy-to-replace crossover or a bad driver, because that can turn a cheap buy into a money pit fast. If the cabinets are clean and the drivers are all present, this is a worthwhile project piece.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
VAF Research was founded in 1978 in Adelaide, Australia, by serial entrepreneur Philip Vafiadis, establishing it as a enduring Australian stalwart in the hi-fi industry. From modest beginnings, the company has remained a private, family-driven operation, steadfastly committed to in-house design and manufacturing. Over four decades, VAF has cultivated a heritage rooted in relentless innovation and a passion for music reproduction, evolving from early breakthroughs in speaker crossovers to sophisticated modern systems.
The brand specializes exclusively in loudspeakers and subwoofers, eschewing amplifiers, turntables, DACs, headphones, or cables. Its products emphasize natural, uncolored sound through proprietary engineering, such as advanced driver integration and enclosure designs honed over years of research. Standouts like the EVO1 series exemplify this focus, delivering compact yet authoritative performance that prioritizes realism over fleeting trends.
VAF occupies a niche high-end position, revered among discerning Australian audiophiles for its no-compromise approach and value-driven excellence. Far from mainstream hype, it appeals to knowledgeable buyers seeking authentic musicality without gimmicks, backed by a reputation for world-class performance at competitive prices. This boutique status ensures enduring appeal in a market favoring substance over spectacle.
