Because of the isolation achieved by its suspension, the AR turntable is not sensitive to external shock or acoustic feedback. In order to take advantage of its insensitivity to jarring the turntable must be placed on a flat surface, so that the base does not rock. It is also important that it is placed on a reasonably sturdy piece of furniture which does not wobble or rock when jarred.Acoustic Research XA Belt-Drive Turntable — a true icon of analog audio, originally introduced in the 1960s and widely credited with redefining turntable design. The XA features a suspended sub-chassis system that isolates the platter and tonearm from external vibrations, delivering remarkably quiet, stable playback. With its minimalist engineering and precision belt-drive system, the XA focuses on speed consistency, low rumble, and musical accuracy rather than unnecessary complexity. Its simple, elegant design has made it a legend among vintage turntables, often praised for its natural, organic sound and upgrade potential.SPECIFICATIONS Drive method: belt driveSpeeds: 33 and 45rpmBase: oiled walnutLocal pick up / inspection / purchase available at Archer High Fidelity in Falls Church, VA. Our Thoughts RADAR AI

This is a classic belt-drive deck with real enthusiast appeal. At US$295, it lands right around the US$302 median of recent comparable listings, so the asking price looks fair rather than flashy.

The ARXA is valued for its simple, low-resonance design and musical, no-nonsense presentation, and it can be a very satisfying vintage spin if it’s been properly serviced. The main upside is strong: if the belt, motor, and suspension are healthy, you’re getting a respected piece of hi-fi history at a sensible price. Since condition isn’t specified, I’d confirm platter speed stability, arm bearings, and whether any original parts or a fresh service are included.

About Acoustic Research

Acoustic Research (AR) emerged from Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1954, founded by audio pioneer Edgar Villchur and his student Henry Kloss. Villchur, an inventor, researcher, and educator, developed the groundbreaking acoustic suspension loudspeaker principle, patented in 1956, which enabled compact speakers with deep, distortion-free bass. Their debut AR-1 model, unveiled at the 1954 New York Audio Show for $185, revolutionized the industry by shrinking enclosure sizes by up to 75 percent while delivering superior performance, setting the stage for AR's rapid ascent.

The brand focused primarily on loudspeakers, pioneering acoustic suspension designs like the AR-1, AR-2, AR-3 series, and compact bookshelf models such as the AR-4, which appealed to students and families. AR expanded into turntables, including the enduring AR Turntable still prized by vinyl enthusiasts, alongside other stereo components. This emphasis on innovative speakers with flat response, wide dispersion, and extended bass defined their catalog, prioritizing engineering over aesthetics.

AR commanded peak dominance in 1966 with over 32 percent of the U.S. loudspeaker market—the largest share any hi-fi company has achieved—earning reverence for natural sound reproduction and robust build quality. Now owned by VOXX and shifted toward lower-end accessories, its vintage products remain collector icons, embodying mid-century high-fidelity excellence for discerning buyers seeking timeless accuracy.
