The Alpha DAC Series 3P uses Perfected Technology introduced in the Alpha DAC Reference Series 3P to achieve a new level of musical realism possible because of extremely high time domain coherence.New proprietary RF waveguide technology, new ultra-low noise reclocking and new extremely low noise software all dramatically increase musical reality. Berkeley Audio Design Perfected Technology achieves a level of time domain coherence never available before in an audio D to A converter. The result is profound musical realism. Time domain incoherence erases subtle spatial and timbral audio information essential to the experience of live music. Perfected Technology goes beyond sounding excellent to simply sounding real.Specifications• Input sampling rate: 32kHz to 192kHz• Ultra low phase noise Precision Clocking at 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz and 192kHz sampling rates ± 100 ppm• Input word length: 24-bit• Two channel analog stereo outputs: XLR balanced with pin 2 positive and RCA unbalanced• Digital Inputs: AES – XLR, 110; SPDIF1 – BNC, 75; SPDIF2 – BNC, 75; TOSLINK – Toslink optical connector• HDCD decoding detects 16-bit flag at 44.1kHz or 24-bit flag at all sampling rates• MQA Rendering and multiple digital filter options• Balanced analog output level: +18dBu (6.15Vrms) maximum,+12dBu (3.1Vrms) or lower recommended• Unbalanced analog output level: 3.25Vrms maximum, 2Vrms or lower recommended• Digital volume & balance control: 0.1dB/step with .05dB/step L/R gain trim, 60dB range• Frequency response at ≥ 88.2kHz sampling rates: ± 0.1dB from < 0.1Hz to 35 kHz,- 3dB at 59kHz for 176.4kHz and 192kHz sampling rates• Distortion at recommended levels: all products ≤ -120dBFS• THD+N at maximum level: < -110dBFS• Firmware field upgradeable through signal inputs• Enclosure dimensions: 3.5”H X 17.5” W x 12.5”D• Weight: 30 lbs.• Mains power: 100/120/240VAC, 50 /60Hz• Power consumption: 25 W
This is a seller’s market item at that ask: US$15,139 is above the typical used level for the more common Alpha DAC Series 3, but still well below the new US$34,000 price of the Reference Series 3P, so the listing only makes sense if this is the flagship Reference model and it’s exceptionally complete and clean. If it’s actually the standard Series 3, the price is ambitious; if it’s the 3P and includes the right accessories, it’s closer to fair, though not a bargain.
The appeal here is straightforward: Berkeley’s DACs are prized for very low-noise, highly resolving conversion with strong timing and tonal density, and the Reference chassis adds the full-fat power-supply/architecture treatment that serious digital rigs are chasing. For a costly used digital component like this, the upside is best when it’s an original-owner piece with box, remote, and confirmed function, because condition and completeness matter more than cosmetics alone at this level.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Berkeley Audio Design is a U.S. high-end audio brand best known for digital playback, especially DACs. The company traces its roots to the early 2000s, and its identity is closely tied to Michael Ritter, who is widely identified as the founder in interview coverage and company-related media. Berkeley’s lineage is also linked to the earlier professional-digital work of Michael Pflaumer and Pacific Microsonics, which helped shape the brand’s engineering philosophy.
Its product focus is unusually narrow: Berkeley Audio Design concentrates on DACs, digital interfaces, and noise-isolation devices rather than the broader hi-fi spread of amplifiers, speakers, turntables, or headphones. That specialization is a major part of its appeal. The company’s Alpha DAC Reference series has been reviewed as a reference-grade digital component, and Berkeley explicitly positions its products around outperforming far more expensive modular DACs.
In the market, Berkeley Audio Design sits firmly in the niche boutique high-end tier. It is not a mass-market brand or a vintage collector label; instead, it targets serious listeners and mastering-minded buyers who prioritize digital accuracy, low noise, and top-tier conversion. Its reputation rests on engineering focus, limited product scope, and a strong audiophile following rather than broad category coverage.
