Seller's Description

For sale: a Luxman WL-550, a classic vintage FM/AM stereo tuner from Luxman, one of Japan's most respected hi-fi brands. The WL-550 delivers precise tuning, excellent reception performance, and warm analog sound that pairs beautifully with vintage and modern stereo systems alike.

This unit has been professionally serviced (pot meters cleaned, lights replaced, front-end cleaned and aligned, new feet installed) and functions correctly. It currently has a US plug installed but runs on 220V. A different plug can be fitted if needed.

Condition: excellent working condition and has been professionally serviced. All functions operate correctly, tuning is stable, and reception is clean. Controls turn smoothly with no scratchy noise thanks to cleaned potentiometers.

Cosmetically, the unit shows light surface scratches on the top panel, which are minor and barely noticeable in normal lighting. Front panel, display, and knobs look very clean for its age.

It is fitted with a US plug but operates on 220V. If desired, the plug can be changed before shipping.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

This is a fair ask to slightly ambitious for US$699 if the unit is truly for parts rather than a working, serviced piece. The catch is that a non-working Luxman F-15 is much harder to benchmark than a tested example, and at this price you’re paying near the level where a clean, functioning vintage Luxman often starts to feel more attractive.

What makes it worth a look is the Luxman name: these pieces are prized for refined, low-fatigue sound and strong build quality, so even parts units can interest restorers if the faceplate, knobs, transformer, and cosmetics are intact. The upside is highest if it’s complete, original, and simply needs competent repair. If it’s missing major parts or has unknown damage, the ask becomes less compelling fast.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Luxman

Luxman traces its origins to 1925 in Osaka, Japan, when brothers T. Hayakawa and K. Yoshikawa launched a radio equipment division within their Kinsuido picture frame import business, coinciding with Japan's inaugural radio broadcast. Initially importing components, the company soon pivoted to in-house manufacturing of transformers and switches, birthing the Luxman brand and establishing it as one of Japan's oldest electronic component makers. This heritage of precision engineering has endured through ownership shifts, including stints with Alpine and Samsung, before returning to Japanese hands in the early 2000s under dedicated Luxman Corporation.

The brand specializes in luxury high-end audio components, with a storied emphasis on amplifiers—both integrated and power models—preamplifiers, and receivers renowned for their warm, detailed sound. Luxman also produces turntables, CD players, tape decks, and speakers, alongside modern digital offerings like DACs, all handcrafted in Japan with custom parts and dual-mono designs for ultimate fidelity.

Positioned firmly in the high-end market, Luxman commands respect among discerning audiophiles for its timeless aesthetics, uncompromising build quality, and sonic refinement that bridges vintage warmth with cutting-edge performance. Classics like the 1970s CL-32 preamp and 1980s L-507 integrated amplifier fuel its collector appeal, while contemporary lines reaffirm its status as a boutique benchmark for those seeking "Ultimate Fidelity since 1925."
