Seller's Description

Excellent condition Santiagos, with the incredibly rare original grills. Original horns and drivers with refreshed crossovers, no mods of any kind. Also built new risers out of solid oak to replace the disintegrating particle board, risers will outlive the speakers now.One small blemish on each top corner, look worse in the picture then they actually are. Grills also have small holes in all 4 corners. Original owner had Valencia lattices mounted to the front. These sound as amazing as they look. For obvious reasons these are local pickup only.

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

Fair asking price at USD 2,500. This slots right in the middle of recent comparable used listings for similar Altec horns, where the median sits at USD 2,143, with the 25th percentile at USD 1,116 and 75th at USD 6,250—making it neither a steal nor a stretch for a solid 878A Santiago pair.

Before biting, verify the horns' crossovers haven't gone gummy from age—Altecs from this era often need recap jobs that run USD 200-400—and check for original drivers intact, as Voice of the Theatre replacements are pricey. Insist on shipping in custom crates to avoid cone damage; anything less risks a mangled investment.

Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.

About Altec Lansing

Altec Lansing traces its roots to 1927 in the United States, emerging from the merger of Western Electric’s theater-equipment arm, All Technical Service Company, with Lansing Manufacturing, the speaker company founded by James B. Lansing. The Altec-Lansing name reflects that union, and the brand’s early reputation was built in cinema and professional sound rather than consumer hi-fi.

Historically, Altec Lansing was known for loudspeakers, theater systems, and audio amplifiers, especially the legendary Voice of the Theatre systems that became a benchmark in cinema sound. In its classic era, the company also helped define the early hi-fi market by promoting professional-style sound systems for home use.

In market terms, Altec Lansing is best understood today as a legacy heritage brand rather than a current high-end audiophile heavyweight. Its name still carries weight among collectors and vintage audio enthusiasts because of its pro-audio history and classic speaker designs, but the modern brand identity is far more mainstream and consumer-oriented than its mid-century golden age.
