Seller's Description

For sale is a pair of Bowers and Wilkins (B&W) Matrix 803 Series II stereo speakers. I am the original owner and all of the original packing material has been preserved. The condition is Excellent - in fact they look exactly the same as they did when I first bought them. There are no dings and scratches in the wood. The grill cloth is pristine. The speaker cones and surrounds are nearly like new. Unlike most of the current B&W line (other than Nautilus) that are made in Asia, these were manufactured with special quality in the UK and have consecutive serial numbers. Here are the specifications:Description: 2 way vented-box systemDrive Units:- 1 x 25mm metal dome - high frequency- 1 x 165mm Kevlar ® - midrange- 2 x 165mm Cobex ® - bassFrequency Response: 35Hz – 20kHz ± 3dB on reference axisSensitivity: 90dB spl(2.83V 1m)Nominal Impedance: 8 ohms (minimum 3.7 ohms)Power Handling:50W – 250W into 8 ohms on unclipped programmeDimensions: Height: 1017mm (40"), Width: 258mm (10"). Depth: 334mm (13")Finish:WalnutGrille: Brown ClothFloor spikes includedTechnical highlights- Kevlar®: B&W developed and patented the method of using Kevlar® for loudspeaker cones to reduce unwanted standing waves. DuPont originally created Kevlar® for use in bulletproof vests.- Tweeter on top: B&W's Tweeter on top technology ensures that the sound remains focused and time-sensitive and that the stereo-image is presented with unparalleled three dimensional accuracy.- Matrix: The basic construction of nearly all loudspeakers is exactly the same - panels of wood-based materials, bonded to form a rectangular box. B&W studied and evaluated how each aspect of cabinet behavior and the efficiency of various materials and construction methods affects sound. The sound is excellent. I actually upgraded to the B&W Nautilus 802 speakers and put these in storage. I later sold the 802s and brought these back into the system. The cabinet construction is impeccable. There is very little resonance in the cabinet which makes for a more focused sound with tighter bass. The bass is excellent and I would not personally need a subwoofer with these speakers. However, depending on the type of music you are listening to, they may benefit with a subwoofer. The reason I'm selling them is that I need a system smaller and lighter.Check out the later (and more expensive) model Nautilus 803 speakers and you will see their lineage from the Matrix 802 Series II speakers. Please check out my sellers feedback from prior sales. I typically have units that are in excellent shape, fully functioning, and with the original packaging. This one is no exception.I'm listing these as a local pickup. Each box weights around 70lbs, therefore shipping costs could be significant. If you are interested in these wonderful UK-made speakers and would like them shipped, please message me. Otherwise, I would be happy to meet you within a 1 hour radius of Richmond, VA and/or Roanoke, VA.

About Bowers & Wilkins

Bowers & Wilkins traces its origins to 1966 in Worthing, West Sussex, England, when John Bowers, a passionate audio enthusiast and former electronics shop owner, founded the company with the help of a £10,000 bequest from a satisfied customer, Miss Knight. Bowers, who had honed his speaker-building skills as a hobby while running a radio and TV rental shop with partner Roy Wilkins, launched the venture from the back of that very shop. This modest beginning fueled a relentless pursuit of audio perfection, establishing Bowers & Wilkins as a British icon in high-fidelity sound reproduction.

The brand excels in premium loudspeakers, from flagship studio monitors like the legendary 801 series—adopted by Abbey Road Studios in 1979—to accessible Domestic Monitor lines such as the enduring 600 Series. Its portfolio has expanded to encompass high-end headphones, including the iconic P5 and Zeppelin designs, alongside wireless speakers and formation systems, all emphasizing advanced driver technology, precision cabinetry, and Continuum cones for unparalleled clarity.

Positioned firmly in the high-end market, Bowers & Wilkins commands respect among discerning audiophiles for its engineering excellence, musical accuracy, and heritage of innovation. Far from mid-tier or niche, it rivals the elite, blending cutting-edge research from facilities like Steyning with a reputation for reference-grade performance that defines luxury hi-fi.
