Seller's Description

SONY Carbacon / SS-3035 LoudspeakersSought after and increasingly rare in good condition, these vintage speakers are excellent quality. They have been in storage for a little while and seem to have survived the experience well.Maybe some signs of rubber flake around one mid-range driver and the light dings and marks that one might expect from any vintage item over 50 years old.Gave them a quick run out yesterday and all seems as it should be.There we are....I found a couple of pairs for sale elsewhere averaging around £400..Not sure I agree and will start these much lower and see where they go.Thanks for taking a lookCOLLECT ONLY but, at the right price I would prefer to deliver these. I will not post them.A bit of tech spec:Manufacturer: Sony / Model: SS-3050 / 1975 - 1978Made in: JapanColor: WalnutDimensions: 315 x 580 x 290 mm (WxHxD)Weight: 15 kgTechnical :3-way closed / Low frequency: 250 mm Carbocon cone / Midrange: 60 mm cone / Tweeter: 50 mm conePower handling: 70 WattEfficiency: 91 dB / W / mFrequency response: 40 - 20'000 HzTransition range: 2'500 Hz, 12'000 HzImpedance: 8 OhmResonant frequency: 55 HzLevel control for midrange and treble +4 -16dB

Our Thoughts RADAR AI

This US$120 asking price is a strong deal, sitting well below the 25th percentile of US$88 for comparable listings in the used market. With the median at US$141 and the 75th percentile at US$259, you are paying significantly less than what most sellers are asking for this era of Sony Carbacon speakers, making it an excellent buying opportunity right now.

The Sony SS-3035 Carbacon system is well-regarded for its 1980s teak cabinets and composite front face, offering excellent quality that is increasingly rare in good condition. These speakers deliver a balanced, warm sound characteristic of Sony’s advanced simulation technology from that period, and finding them with original material grilles in excellent condition is a genuine upside. No caveats apply here given the price and stated condition; this is a clean, high-value listing for a fellow enthusiast looking to add a credible vintage pair without overpaying.

About Sony

Sony emerged from the ruins of post-World War II Japan, founded on May 7, 1946, by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district. Starting with radio repairs and Japan's first magnetic tape recorder, the duo secured transistor licensing from Bell Labs, pioneering the TR-55 transistor radio in 1955. Renamed Sony Corporation in 1958—from the Latin "sonus" for sound—the brand symbolized Japan's ascent from cheap imitations to innovative leadership, fueled by Ibuka's engineering prowess and Morita's global marketing vision.

Sony's hi-fi legacy spans headphones, amplifiers, speakers, turntables, and DACs, alongside landmark formats like the Compact Disc in 1982 and Blu-ray. Iconic products include the Walkman for portable audio revolution and Trinitron televisions, blending consumer accessibility with cutting-edge tech. Today, offerings like the Signature Series headphones and ES amplifiers target discerning listeners seeking refined soundstaging and dynamic range.

Positioned as a mid-to-high-end powerhouse, Sony commands respect among knowledgeable buyers for blending mass-market reliability with premium performance, outpacing many pure audiophile brands in innovation and value. Far from vintage relic or niche boutique, it dominates with forward-thinking engineering, holding strong market share in headphones and streaming ecosystems.
