Sony La Scala 2 in great condition, NO SPEAKERS, i marked it as 6/10 only because there are 2 or 3 small scratches on the top of 2 of the units, they cant be seen when they are stacked. Everything functions as it should and is in really great shape, i have the original purchase receipt from 1998 along with the instruction booklets and working remote control. It has been sat around unused for a few years now and i really dont have a use for it any more and i would like someone else to enjoy it. I have listed for £190 but i am open to offers, I will ideally only accept cash on collection, locate... read more
Timing matters a bit here because older Sony speaker models can be excellent value, but you want to know whether this is a late-era classic or just a niche, hard-to-place variant. At £190, it sits well above the £65 median and even above the £92 75th percentile for recent GBP comparables, so this is an ambitious ask rather than a bargain.
That said, if the cabinets are clean and the drivers are original, the appeal is usually in the lively, easygoing Sony sound and the chance to pick up a lesser-seen model in decent shape. A tidy pair with no foam rot, no tweeter issues, and matching grilles could still be worth it to the right buyer, but at this level I’d want strong condition, confirmation that both speakers are working properly, and ideally some reassurance on originality before calling it good value.
Independent perspective — not a price guarantee. Always verify condition, accessories and provenance before purchase.
Sony emerged from the ruins of post-World War II Japan, founded on May 7, 1946, by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district. Starting with radio repairs and Japan's first magnetic tape recorder, the duo secured transistor licensing from Bell Labs, pioneering the TR-55 transistor radio in 1955. Renamed Sony Corporation in 1958—from the Latin "sonus" for sound—the brand symbolized Japan's ascent from cheap imitations to innovative leadership, fueled by Ibuka's engineering prowess and Morita's global marketing vision.
Sony's hi-fi legacy spans headphones, amplifiers, speakers, turntables, and DACs, alongside landmark formats like the Compact Disc in 1982 and Blu-ray. Iconic products include the Walkman for portable audio revolution and Trinitron televisions, blending consumer accessibility with cutting-edge tech. Today, offerings like the Signature Series headphones and ES amplifiers target discerning listeners seeking refined soundstaging and dynamic range.
Positioned as a mid-to-high-end powerhouse, Sony commands respect among knowledgeable buyers for blending mass-market reliability with premium performance, outpacing many pure audiophile brands in innovation and value. Far from vintage relic or niche boutique, it dominates with forward-thinking engineering, holding strong market share in headphones and streaming ecosystems.
